You're only putting 5 jars per mono? How big are your mono's/what's your intended spawn ratio?

That's sounds good to me. I usually go for 4-6 quarts for that much sub. 5 should be perfect IMO Only question I got is why no verm?

Really? I need to try a tub like this then. I always assumed that verm was mandatory, but if you had good results then maybe I should try it! I learn something new on here every single day.

Was it a pain to find the widemouths?
I had to order store to pickup last week, only regular mouths on the shelves which I bought anyways...
Buut, Just a bandaid ... seems to simple, whats the ploy.
I drill same hole in center, and than RTV a layer of tyvek painters suit rated at .2 microns than I put another layer of rtv over that followed with another small piece.

Regardless,

no they stocked them at a local food store by the case. 14.99 for a case of 12. use tyvek envelopes. they are free from the post office. cut them down to fit over entire lid. metal ring secures them down over the medal top. u get 12 covers from 1 envelope. ive used band aids since day one. they come sterile and easy to work with. inject with spores n cover with band aid...simple

Yea I always wanted to try just coir too on a small scale first, but I have read the verm, in addition to holding water, acts to make the substrate more "fluffy" helping the myc rip through it faster. maybe I read wrong, or remembered wrong. But hey, if it works for you, go for it!

I guess. The spawn looks just fine. The tub itself is oddly colonized at different spots and quite bare at others
Op. Did you mix the spawn with the sub evenly?

You know I actually thought about that once the tub started colonizing. I really can't remember if I mixed it in good enough. I am always so busy with work n such.... but with that being said I made sure to mix the following tubs very well. Anyways, it will get there just may take a little longer.
Question: Does anyone have experience with fruiting in the cold? I always use my attic for hush hush reasons and it is currently in the 30s. Was thinking an electric heater on a timer would do. That is if it is even necessary?

So the cold has become an issue with slowing my colonization down greatly which I've never had to deal with before during tub colonization/fruiting. Using a space heater on a timer in my attic didnt seem to safe for fire hazard reasons. I got the thinking and decided to put each colonizing tub in another tub with 5 or 6 inches of water with a fish tank heater. Just like people do with colonizing jars. I was just wondering if anyone has done this before or read about it. Any input is useful. Thanks

the water between the tubs isnt going into the tub with the spawn/mic in it so im not to worried about contaminants. more worried about contaminants from taking to long to colonize. What do you mean by heat bomb? the heater is set to keep the water at 75 degree. so the tub above should be around 70. the heat from the water isnt just building up if that is what you mean???

Stop putting that top layer of bulk substrate over it.....this is what if fucking you.
Just mix the spawn evenly with the substrate and cover....no top layer.....do not worry about covering the exposed spawn.

i thought it want good to leave exposed grains? you think the cold isnt a factor with the slow colonization? and when i say cold its in the teens-low 20s outside... so my attic is probably 30-40s...

The only difference it makes is in colonization times, obviously.
Mine colonize in 10 days or so @ 65F.

i have 4 tubs in basement closet space but they will be moved to the attic shortly. have kids and family over quit often so id rather them be in the attic if possible. my basement is finished and an entertainment area ppl are in it to much for comfort. plus they have to be there for fruiting. the one tub that is there now is kida the experiment tub...

thought the grain promoted other growths and the top layer was more of a protective barrier. Never had a real issue before till now. ill try iit without for the last tub and see how it goes. back to the cold issue.... they are not going to fruit in those temps... if anything they will freeze....

The cold is not helping obviously. The solution would be to get the tubs out of your attic. You don't have any other place they could go
Also in the future you should take hackers advice and stop with the top layer, its not doing anything but drying out and preventing full colonization. People have just been mixing it all up for a while now.

yea it seems that way. I started doing monos as my 1st grow quite a few years ago and have never changed my procedures or checked for updated info. Just like to pop up every now and again to show the tubs....and of course if i have an issue....

been an extremely long grow. BUT this is a pic from a week ago. dried out to 3 1/2 oz just dunked and put back into fruiting.

this is from today. not to bad.

lost 2 tubs from the experimental attic set up. did not work plain and simple. tubs are back in the closet covered with lots of junk during the day and light/ computer fan at night. still have another tub that i just mixed up a few days ago.

my friend just moved into an older apt, 3rd floor with an attic as the 4th, not meant for living just storage, so its pretty beat up and unisulated, visible mold in many places, as well as god knows what kind of shit from the years and years of former tenants. he wanted me to set up a tub up there, and i said no because of all the mold. is that where ur attic thing went wrong, or was it something else?

It was the cold. I tried everything I could think of to warm them. Just didn't work out.
I grew under an addition on a house. Had signs of mold and a dirt floor. Growing nightmare ud think. I lined the entire room with plastic used by painters. Only lost a few jars within 5 or 6 grows.
