What really causes someone to be a junkie on hard drugs?
    #19113710 - 11/10/13 08:30 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

What causes someone to want to mess around with hard drugs? I am not trying to sound like a drug elitist, but why do people want to do drugs that while "strong" have a potential to really make your life difficult, with marijuana around?

I think the powers that be hate the fact that mom and pop medical :leaf: marijuana :leaf: shops is hurting the cartels by shrinking their profits.

A lot of evidence supports that marijuana can help people get off harder drugs. If pot was cheap and abundant, and good, I imagine life would improve because this very soft "drug" likely supresses other drug use. :bigweed:

There are a variety of reasons people get into hard drugs. Usually people are told it isn't that bad or just try it once. The people who seek out hard drugs are usually people with big heads who don't think anything will bring them down.

THC is nice, true.

But variety is the spice of life.

Consistent repeated use of hard drugs is what makes someone a junkie usually.

I agree, cannabis is powerful medicine. It helped me break my addiction to alcohol.

eh, idk man, pot just intensifies a lot of peoples' withdrawal from heroin.  makes shit better for 5-10 minutes, but after that my friends and my girlfriend tell me that it just magnifies the symptoms.

and you think better access to weed would make a junkie not want his junk?

i don't see the logic in that, every time i scored heroin, i could've just as easily scored weed.  it's a conscious decision you make.

what makes somebody mess with hard drugs? same thing that makes you want to mess with 'soft' drugs.

people just like to get high dude. you don't think there are negative repercussions to marijuana use?

i like weed as much as the next guy, but the answer is simple man, dope feels really fuckin good.

i don't buy that whole gateway drug shit either.  if you could buy weed in the store that wouldn't stop people from wanting their junk. liquor stores don't stop people from wanting cocaine or whatever else.

and do you think anybody "enjoys" being a junkie?

if it was so easy to stop, everybody would.  we all have lives to live, not everybody can take two weeks off, let alone a month or year, get suboxone, and kick the shit just like that.

it takes a little more than just that, it's not a very comfortable situation i'm afraid. you're proper fucked in withdrawal.

if bud made you feel like you were dying when you didn't have it, would you so easily abstain?

my answer is if you want to know, find out for yourself.

IME as a former heroin addict, I feel "junkies" are people who seek out drugs because the fill them with a false sense of security.
I fell junkies and addicts are different.

I live in Colorado, come next year I will get to buy "recreational" weed at the store, with less regulation than Amsterdam except for a higher age (21) but it's still way more legal.

Also people can grow there own now, and the market will be FLOODED.

If you could just as easily score weed not on the streets but in a store, chances are a lot of people would simply do less of the harder drugs.

I didn't say it would go away, but I would also like to see the government do what switzerland does, treat heroin addicts with heroin, improve their shitty lives, helps them want to stop more often than not

Smoking pot will not get you off drugs say, heroin.

That will just be a great combination.

Legalizing pot, regardless of popular stoner belief, will not save the world.

edit: Also, most people wanting a specific hard drug probably are not faced with the issue of not being able to find pot.

What gets people into hard drug?

1) Inability to control their curiosity
2) Lack of education
3) Someone mislead them
4) Emotional turmoil
5) Mental illness
6) Prescription from injury
7) Impulsive behavior
8) Teenage revolt against parents
9) Bad upbringing
10) Stupidity

That probably makes up 99% of hard drug users.

Weed has it's time and place, but there are so many better drugs out there, weed can't even compare. Just have a bit of self control and you should be fine.

Curiosity mostly, IMO. It's just very human to be curious. I don't think anyone goes in thinking "I want to be a junkie on hard drugs!" it just ends up that way, steadily. I guess there are all sorts of reasons why they would be curious but in the end the only true cause is themselves.

Weed just puts shit in perspective and makes you feel like a moron for dumb things you've done in your past. Sort of like a truth serum.

It doesn't hold a candle in the euphoria department.

Some people's lives are shit to begin with, and drugs are an escape.  Until shit hits the fan.  Sometimes it is that simple.

because pot sucks and pot heads can't seem to get over the fact that some people just don't care for it.

Honestly pot has given me a harder time than any other drug. And I find it to have the most addiction potential. Probably partly because of the stupid belief that it's harmless and okay to smoke pot all the time that makes me justify smoking it so much... I haven't dabbled into many serious drugs, but have messed with benzos, tramadol, ketamine, and mxe... All drugs that people have serious control issues with and I just can not get addicted to any of them. But with weed.... "Oh that bowl sounds enticing. Holy fuck I feel stupid now. Time to sleep." Next morning "I still feel stupid, but a hit would feel so relaxing."

I seriously need to find a way to scale back weed or cut it out all together. A month ago I took an aya ceremony and for the next week I had the clearest head I've ever had. I felt awake and alert and at peace. A single night of weed and ketamine completely undid that. Last week I took some AL-LAD and same thing, clear headed for days, until I started smoking again. Now I'm back to feeling sluggish and retarded.

I know this isn't everyone's experience with weed, but I can't stand people acting like this stuff is some holy grail medicine sent from the gods. It works for some but it is not the universal path to happiness. There are plenty of pot addicts in denial because stoner culture tells them it's okay. But hey, I'm not judging them, just leveling the field if you want an honest perspective. Stoners are no better than junkies really.

Okay, since you asked without being a condescending douche, I'll do my best to sort of kind of try to answer. It's not an uncomplicated issue, however. There are a lot of factors. If it were simple, it would probably be far easier to treat and/or prevent.

1- There may be a genetic factor in addiction. This is rather unfortunate, as it means that certain people have to be very careful, no matter what, in terms of what they do...

2- A related but potentially separate issue is whether a genetic propensity for poor impulse control may be a factor.  Both of these points are things that a person can not prevent... which is one of the many things that makes people who judge junkies huge fucking judgmental douchebags.

3- Since there may be an inherently genetic element, there is a question of whether being raised around other addicts may also contribute in the form of learned behaviors.

4- Many people who are prone to addiction are also very prone for high levels of depression and anxiety, as well as having poor or undeveloped coping mechanisms (other than drugs.) I was raised by two addicts. Where do you imagine  I would have learned how to cope with life stress in a healthy manner, when I was growing up?

5- I think this one may be a risk for all drug users, to one degree or another, but I'm sure addicts are especially at risk:  People who use drugs to "self medicate" run the risk of those drugs losing their effect as time goes on. Tolerance develops. This is the reason most addicts tend to just end up using more and more, driving their tolerance ever skyward.

I'm not sure how long you've been smoking marijuana, but some of us seem to plateau pretty quickly. I remember the first time I got stoned. I was so high it was like I was tripping. A couple years back, even quitting for a few months, then smoking again-- a few hits of mid-grade was enough to get me to that "tripping" level of the pot high. However, after smoking for just a few months straight, no matter how low and reasonable I keep my smoking levels (even if it's just one small bowl at the end of the night) pot is not having nearly the same effect on me anymore. There are days I find myself wishing I could still feel / enjoy it the way I used to. I could stop, theoretically. However, they don't call it self-medicating for nothing. If I stop abruptly, I get headaches, nauseated, have a hard time eating and sleeping properly, and am highly irritable.

Anyway, if you're self-medicating and the pot stops working... either you manage to stop smoking to drop tolerance (hard for a self-medicating addict) or you find something stronger to substitute / add / "help"

6-  You do make an interesting point about pot being cheap and abundant.  That is another factor that ties in with the point above. I dabbled for a number of years, only using opiates occasionally. Do you know when I became an honest-to-goodness, get-sick-if-I-don't-have-it junkie?  It was when I met a new connect, and suddenly heroin became dose-for-dose cheaper than marijuana.

My tolerance was high, so I'd smoke at least around $100 worth of pot a week and most of the time barely be high. But suddenly I could get smack for $50 per "bundle" (ten bags). Where half a bag could even get me high (with no tolerance) and as long as I didn't use it every day, a whole bundle could last me a couple weeks... maybe.... (at first.  Of course, you keep going and the same thing applies as pot. Near the end I could put ten bags directly into my veins at a time. No joke.)

7- If I had a dollar for every junkie in history who said "I only use occasionally. I take breaks, I'm careful. I can stop when I want," I'd be a fucking billionaire.

For some stupid, stupid STUPID reason, every single one of us morons thinks we'll be okay. We'll be the one to get away with it. Because we're special, or smart, or careful, or whatever idiotic justification. Even if there are older, more experienced junkies around to tell us that we're full of shit, we somehow still believe it. Maybe that's ego. Maybe it's some other psychological phenomenon, or some combo thereof. But that's how it works. You think you're safe, or more careful, or somehow immune, right up until it's too late.

8- As someone else pointed out, variety may also be a factor. Just like many people like to use multiple forms of "softer" drugs (smoking some times, maybe tripping, and drinking other times-- even though I actually consider alcohol to be a hard drug in amounts over one or two standard drinks.)  People do like variety.

9- Not everyone likes pot. I know... don't entirely get it either. But pot just isn't for everyone. I think this may be partly, but not entirely due to the fact that pot almost acts like a mild psychedelic in someone without a tolerance... and some people just can't seem to handle tripping without freaking out.

There are other factors, of course, but these are what I see as some of the main ones...

I hate pot elitist. Hard drug vs soft drug is a limited and ignorant debate. Also, addiction is based on individual. I've never had a drug problem and I've used hard and soft drugs. I hate that pot heads believe cannabis is some cure all fucking miracle. Yeah it's good but whatever.
