up to version 1.1 Added some more info to the PF tek section especially the SGFC part and FAE part. Slowly but surly. Feel free to post suggestions.
These wedges are taking of pretty slow. Then again I did use really small wedges, and it has only been 4 days.

Great summary man, thanks for taking the time to do this. I'm a few months behind you but found many of the same conclusions so far.......and I've found every question I have has been asked, since I really dug in to searching harded in the last month. My biggest problem is that search can give outdated information also, from seemingly reputable sources. I sort all searches by date posted now.

Sifting through info is difficult but often times I'll make a thread asking for the current opinion after I have done research and found more than one answer. These kinds of discussions are more fun than is this substrate going to fruit tomorrow I'm leaving in 2 days and I was trying to bring shrooms along.

There is definitely 2 different distinct types of mycellium there.
If they are glass or pp5 I would sterilize them and then dump them and save the jar and lid.
If they cannot be sterilized without melting I would just toss them.
Either way, those are trashed. Sorry guy....better luck next batch.

Ha The search engine is a big part of my guide; however it's hard to know what to trust right away when you get here.
I'm just really going to try to get as many new people off on the right foot as possible so that once they have legit questions down the road they know how to do their own research. As well as not having developed bad habits to start with

hey, I have done a lot of reading on the subject and I am very thorough but this is all new to my friend and I. My friend has the lab and I go there often to babysit. This is round three and this is about where I get each time, the last round had some other type of spores that looked a bit dark grey. Would you look at these and tell me what you think so far. Specs... Brown rice flour, vermiculite, water with perlite filter. Plastic lab grade jars with 4 1/8" holes, temp is 74.5F - 76.5 with 50% humidity in the room, 150 CFM hepa-filter, kept in dark, pressure cooker used, inoculated 10 days ago. Thanks

To add to my post, I see small areas that under 30x loop look a little grey and to describe it, it looks speckled, maybe fluffy. Is this the so called cottony looking mycelium?

tomentose mycelium is the name I believe for cottony looking. most ppl use a dry verm layer, not perlite. perlite might work.... but I'd imagine its a bit too pourous to keep out con tams (if u don't have another measure for filtering on top of jars) and to keep in moisture. when u say the pics u posted are where u usually get, what happens after, do they contam or just stop?
also if u have access to a lab, start reading about agar work! its awesome! you don't need a lab, but it doesn't hurt

ok I see. so could be bad syringe if all else is ok...where is its origin? otherwise...what I said above. it seems like you have read enough to prepare a BRF jar recipe, why did you choose perlite instead of verm as the top layer? Is the perlite moist at all? ps. this is kinda thread jacking, so I'd feel more comfortable if u started ur own thread....sorry dude

it's fine this thread can be for help too.
I need to do some work on the OP still. I know I'm lazy, but it will get there.

the perlite filter is weird? any reason for that. Use a verm filter next time and hope for the best this time. Temp is good. While the jars are colonizing like that you don't have to worry about humidity in the room though that's more of a fruiting concern Same with the hepa filter. Even when you fruit you don't need that going. A fully colonized cake is very contam resistant and while they're colonizing in the jars nothing is going to go through the jar You don't have to keep them in the dark. The mushrooms benifit from light during all stages of growth. Light does not trigger pinning in the ways most people think it does. Look up "lighting requirements of mushrooms" or I'll find and post it later on today.
Hard to tell if it's contam or not. They look good to me but let them grow out for a few more days and take some new pictures.
