Alright, so I loves me some sound quality. I can't put up with any of that SkullCandy shit or other cheap bullshit that is bass overload with everything else all washed out. I wouldn't call myself an audiophile, but I like to hear every element/instrument of music, not some sloppy version of the song I'm listening to.

I'm looking for some headphones that make music sound... Fun but crisp and defined.

My price range is about $100-$150. I want over ear headphones, fuck in ear headphones, they never work for me. I have some Klipsch in ear thangs and I can barely put up with them, they're so hard to seat in the ear properly.

I don't listen to FLAC files, I do V0 VBR mp3. I'm not a producer, so I don't need those headphones with stupid sound detail. I just like to hear everything while it still sounds... fun. Also, I need something closed, can't do open, gotta respect the coworkers. So what do yous sound folks recommend?

Here's what I'm considering:

Shure SHR440
Audio-Technia ATH-M30
Audio-Technia ATH-M50

Any other suggestions are welcome. Grado is out because they are all open from what I've seen.

Much appreciate! Great times!

Any of those should be good, I'm going to be in the market for some new headphones as well. Probably pick up a headphone amp as well, been without one too long

Agreed, the best sound you can get is completely live and a pair of $200 headphones with a headphone amp doesn't fall very short. Basically after a certain point I don't think audiophile materials are worth the money, you face diminished returns

There used to be an unofficial rule-of-thumb back in the day. Over $3000 for a pair of hi-fi speakers, every time you spend twice as much, you bay get a 10% better quality. So a $6000 pair would be 10% better, a $12,000 pair would be % better etc

As for the JVC guy, no need to get butthurt, but that company only make their money becaise old people think theyre a trusted name, but have nothing to back it up. My mother would by JVC claiming 'its a good brand' but actually not having the first clue about the product specifications and performance.

With the chinese market being so huge these days, there are some very good quality headphones for not a lot of money. There's no reason why any sane persoon would even consider a JVC product if they did some back-to-back comparisons

Nobody getting butt hurt. Just laughing at your nonsense. You still continue to hate on a brand that you obviously have no idea about and keep callin' me out. I have done comparisons and gone though many pairs of headphones. Sony and skullcandy were my favorites growing up so idk where your getting this "JVC guy" nickname from. You just keep pressing your opinions like they matter so much haha.

I got a pair of Klipsch in ear headphones. there like 60 bucks. they are way better sound quality than skull candy and theyve lasted me over a year.

Edit: lol i gotta read the WHOLE post from now on. Funny you had the same ones as me probably. I personally like them. I also have a pair of vic firth headphones which ive had for about 5 years. great over the head headphone and they block out all external noise (made for drummers)

It's quite common knowledge that JVC headphones aren't worth your time. The same happens to be true about Bose, Beats, Skullcandy and many many more. To those who know anything about headphones, Skullcandy in particular are known as a scam.

Yeah.  I had a pair of skullcandy skullcrushers and they broke in like 2 months and sounded really subpar.  I don't get why people spend like $70 for headphones when they could spend $150 on WAY better headphones that actually last.

Exactly. These are the best sounding, most well-built cans for the price:

I've gone through so many pairs of skullcandy. They all break or the cord becomes disconnected so I wouldn't recommend most headphones from them unless you are on a tight budget. They do have nice ear buds though like the fmj which can withstand a lot of torture if you are into sports.

Rev: Those headphones look sick, i'd definitely like those for laptop use.

ATH-M50 in a heartbeat. Can't be beat for the price. Arguably can't be beat (though can perhaps be equalled) by any sub-$200 headphone.

I love mine. A caveat - they do need 40-60 hours burn-in before they are at their best. Download a free burn-in app and play it at your normal listening volume every night for a week while you sleep. The thing is, if you like them the first time you listen to them you will LOVE them after the burn-in.

Those aT m50's are the best at that price range.  At about $100 I like the Sennheiser HD-280's but they still don't sound as good as the M50's.  Every pair of Sony headphones I've ever listened to sounded like shit.  Bose too.

Skullcandy is the 'monster cable' of headphones--way overpriced generic headphones in a fancy package.

I have the BeyerDynamic DT770's and they are sexypie.  Dankman turned me on to them when I was looking at seinheiser and grado's.

They come in different resistances so you can use them without a headphone amp if you want.

In that price range, I'd say definitely get the M50s. I own a pair (got em for about $120) and they sound pretty good. They got me interested in higher fidelity headphones/audio, which turned into a purchase of some HE-400 headphones (like $400). The HE-400s are pretty sweet but I almost prefer the bass from the M50s (somewhat expected, as they're closed headphones, vs. open HE-400s).

You won't be disappointed with the M50s. I spent a lot of time researching this matter online (mostly at headfi.org) and I'd say almost all audiophiles have respect for the M50s and consider them very good value for money.

It's a shame you just can't convince some people that they are buying into marketing hype.

loco501, If you don't understand why these commercial brands are not on par with industry-preferred brands, then you need to stay out of a thread where someone is asking for advice, because you have none to give.

i'd say the sennheiser hd280 pro's are good

also the atm m50's you mentioned are pretty good also

maybe a pair of the lower model beyers?

these are all pretty good cans that run relatively well from portable sources without any amplification
