    #19112168 - 11/09/13 09:17 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I am just gonna do what I feel is right and purchase an all american pressure cooker, could someone shoot me an ebay link or let me know which model works best for them or which is the best model to buy for doing grain jars

The one that suits your needs is best. Wouldn't you do some research before dropping that kind of money. Find out how many jars you would like to cook and go from there?

All you really need is a presto with a 3 piece weighted pressure regulator. the weights go 5-10-15 lbs.

The more important aspect is how many qt. jars it hold, the standard one holds 7, an upgrade from that holds 10.

Thanks guys, shes a fuckin beaut for sure. I'm not gonna recommend that anyone drop that kinda cash on something unless they are serious about it tho. I got by with a piece of shit pc for a long time, but decided that this year I was gonna take a little of my tax return and treat myself for a change. Maybe I will start doing that more, cause the wife took what was left and pissed it away on flooring for the whole fucking house. Maybe next year I will get a flowhood :super:

Unfortunately I work 60-70 hours a week and when the dogs away the cats will play  It keeps her happy tho and when I decide to spend large portions of my spare time here or with the fungus, she don't complain much. I guess it all works out in the end.

Not at all. My first pc was a shitty ass wedding present that was never intended to do anything but tenderize meat. It could only do 3 quarts at a time. It worked, but it sucked the hind banana fer sure. I used it to get by until I was sure that I liked this hobby.

I fucking LOVE this hobby :awesomenod:

My poor little pressure cooker only holds 4 quart jars but I still treat it with love. It's all I really need anyway. The only people eating them are my wife and I.

Totally forgot to answer the OP.

I know you feel the all american is right. I did too. I don't know your money situation right now.  But if it's anything like mine then I can promise you you will be very happy with a 70$ 16 quart presto.  It holds 7 grain jars (enough for a large mono) and will still last you for years.

If you don't mind dropping a few hundred dollars then I totally agree with go big or go home.  Just make sure it's not too heavy for your heating elements if you have an electric stove.

I prefer the ones without the PSI gauge though, it is unnecessary and needs calibrating once every year or so. I like the weighted kind.

I own a little presto 8 quart that works OK if your only going to do a few jars. It will hold 5 wide mouth pint jars or 6 reg mouth jars. It will not hold any quarts. I would not suggest this one.

I think that you would like a sterilizer over a PC. I have one in the marketplace (brand new in the box)that holds 7 Quarts without the basket, but with the basket you can dry air sterilize almost anything. I love it for agar, you just have to make sure it doesn't form a vacuum when you open the toggle.

This is the fastest sterilizer they make. It does 7 Quarts in 3/4 the time of a 21 Qt does with 7 Quarts in it.

I have two burners and three of these. I can't run more than two at a time. If I'm a little short on space I break out the 1925x Sterilizer and a 1915x side by side.

They don't make a smaller Sterilizer than the 1915x.

I just sigh when I look at the 941 because I know I'll be spending lots of time dialing her in. I've never needed more than 19 Qts at a time.

I can do 17 on the range inside, so I keep avoiding more than 17 (not to mention they get done quicker).

we use butane burners, and PP5 containers.

i count on fast burner/ heat response butane,
multi cookers run in relay , and plastics cook fast.

we commonly do agar for 20 minits, and grains for 30-35 minits

allowing for heat up, about 24 containers in 3-3.5 hrs,
and, it can be sustained............

peeps get cookers, but its also about cooker strategy.
ive had giant cookers.
id much rather go with the PC strategy i have now.

I have one of them as well. Took 20+ years to need a new gasket and pressure dial. That's the way my AA 1925x Sterilizer works. 7 on the bottom and 3 on top, no gasket.

I have 2 Presto 16qt PC's. They hold 7 qt jars each. $67.00 each. Been using for about 3 years. Haven't even replaced a gasket yet.

But that big AA sterilizer gives me an erection.:whacker:

My 941 was brand new (the lady couldn't fit it between the microwave and the range top) and I got it for a little bit less than half a sellers price.

It is one hell of a nice piece of equipment. Did I mention impressive? I think that they all are.

Not sure what is your application for now.  Buying with the intention
to expand in the future is a good idea.  If electric is cheap in your area then buy one otherwise buy a gas/wood one if you don't worry about no electricity.

Awesome recommendations from everyone, I might go that Presto route because of money situations. Or if I can pull it off this week I'm gonna go big, theres just this stigma around all american like you have to use that to go pro…

But I just checked my thread because I have been quite busy surprised of how much I learned this kind of info is highly appreciated.

Thank You all kindly!

The more important aspect is how many qt. jars it hold, the standard one holds 7, an upgrade from that holds 10.

the presto 23 qt and mirro 21 qt both of which i own hold 10 qt jars.  7 on bottom 3 on top

you lay the 3 jars on their sides? I cant fit them standing up.

yes mushead you can lay 3 jars on their sides on the top of the other 7 i also only use reg mouth quart jars, dunno if wide mouths work or not

i do 10 masters then g2g each master to 10 more jars=100

but i have 2 pcs that hold 10qts to save time
