I doubt it. Unless that's an imported tree, it's likely var. flavivolvata, for obvious reasons.

Ah, thank you canid. I do realize now, guessowii is an eastern sp. I still have a bit of research to do in Amanita. Well, a bit of research all around. It's good to be pointed in the rite direction.

Hey fellas.  "malukie" and I met up today for the first time to do a little hunting.  We found about 10-15 cyans but the leaves were making things near-impossible.  We were wandering around just chatting when we find a patch of what we assume as Psilocybe allenii?!  They had the "look" to them (cap color, clustering, and everything covered in purple spores, haha) but it wasn't until we picked one and saw the insane amount of blue-bruising that we about shit ourselves.  Neither of us has seen allenii in person before.  We must have picked 120-150 caps which we split 50/50 of course.  We were shocked at their size compared to cyans.  They were quite a bit larger and beefier.  They didn't get upturned an wavy like the cyan.

Look at the purple spores everywhere!

Definitely had insane blue bruising but it's hard to capture since the entire stem of most was bruised, preventing an obvious blue on white comparison...

You can see a little bruising around the edge of the cap.

And the one shot of cyans I took...

Very pretty. Classic allenii.

As I was picking them by pinching stems, I was rubbing my thumb on the tops of many caps, inadvertently getting purple spores all over my thumb and fingers.  This is a snapshot from a video malukie took.

Are allenii harder to dry than cyans since they are larger and more dense?  I've always had good luck with drying cyans on cardboard, with a fan nearby circulating air, and my heater on.  These have me worried!

Cool photos fox! I still haven't seen these allenii yet.

I have noticed the second flushes for cyanescens starting and tons of pins everywhere. My outdoor patches seem to be stunted for the meantime.

Nice! I like when that happens, because it means you just had a pretty good hunt. Usually the big caps will do this to my hands.

Yes Joust, Seattle   I don't think I've seen them ever before while hunting cyans.  I feel if I did, I'd at least investigate them enough to snap pics and ask for ID Request on here.  I'm thankful that the patch was pretty big.  We left quite a few smaller ones.  Also, the woodchips were old (nearly white) with lots of grass growing up which camouflaged them.  They were all under a bush or two but I was too excited to even look at the bush.  Sorry bud

Joust buddy... I need help! (or anyone who can help or knows)

So I've got a Cyan patch I've been picking from for 3 years.  I had them positively ID'd on here before when I was new to hunting cyans.  I know they are "cyans" or at least active since I've tripped with them each year.

The odd thing is that compared to regular cyanescens, their caps aren't as upturned, not as dark caramel colored, and stems are narrower.  They still have the caramel color, still have the same fibrous stem (I pinch them so I'm familiar with the feel), have the purple/brown spore print, and bruise blue.  I hadn't given it much thought but this year I've picked SO many cyans that I now have a hunch that they are another species or sub-species.  They aren't allenii as they are very small and DEFINITELY thinner in their cap.  The "cyans" in question still have a slight upturned/waviness to their cap but not like typical cyans.

I snapped these pics.  2 of the "cyans" in question next to 2 obviously healthy cyans.  They were picked from different spots minutes apart just now.

I should add that the "cyans" in question come from a woodchipped area that heavier in dirt and grass than most places I've picked cyans.

Thoughts?

(no flash)

(no flash) Keep in mind I turned the whole cardboard around so they are now on the right in the pic.

(with flash)

I think a lot of people focus on the features of a species so much that they forget it can be so incredibly variable. There are a lot of genetics floating around out there, many only see about two or three phenos but when you get across the state its funny, all sort of fun guys. Last year i found a patch of tiny cyans like 1 in tall lol

Oh, I've definitely seen crazy size variation in cyans.  Just not the difference like I posted.  That's one thing that I find exciting about mushrooms... the diversity from specimen to specimen.

Hey fox die,  I put my allenii on a window screen and then put a box fan face down on the ground.  Set the screen on top of the fan and turn it on low.  I keep my heater about a foot away so they don't get hot but have Luke warm air circulating around them.  It drys them out really well.
