When it comes to first impressions, do you think you subconsciously judge people based on their avatars before you hear what they have to say, or even after you hear what they have to say? I know I used to do that, and I hate the fact that I did. It's so stupid; it's the same as judging someone based on their real life physical appearance. I think most people tend to judge someone based on their appearance before they give them a chance to speak their mind. Anyway, all I'm trying to say is, if you do this, you could be missing out on really important information and perspectives. I guess I'm also trying to say that, if you have a terrible avatar, like me, you should probably change it, lol.

I don't look at the avatars hardly at all.

I judge people on their avatars at first a little bit.

Damn, I'm glad someone else did. For a minute there, I was starting to feel like a total dick, thinking it was just me.

Well I mean, take a look at mine. From first appearance, one might assume I'm a sexist pig. I wouldn't say so though, I just think it's a pretty hawt and cool avatar.

Yup, it's natural to make assumptions from intial data. It's what the human brain is good at and keeps us alive. It's not always correct but generally steers us the right way.
The user selects an avatar they like for whatever reasons, it is therefore a reflection of their own personality. We process the image internally and assign it to previous experiences to make a snap judgement as to how to proceed.
The user has a pic of a massive monotub flush - Probably a good cultivator - Give respect
My little pony image - Gonna be a creepy dude - avoid
Jutin Bieber pic? - teenage girl
Of course you can always be miles off, the first user is a kid who ripped the images from another TC and knows nothing bout shrooms. The other 2 happen to be the same peadophile.
Pretty much impossible to avoid and comes with a double edge of benefits and predjudices.

Mine is a ferret that was groomed and given steroids to make it look like a toy poodle.
I'd love to hear what that says about me

But at the same time, if you think an avatar is cool or beautiful in an atypical way, would you think that person's words would more likely be valuable?

Yep. Not perfect, but it can tell you some stuff. Which people may be a little more spiritual, or religious. Which people may have intellectual interests. Which people may have similar pop cultural interests as me. Which people are into shows / bands / media that I find borderline retarded.
Far from a complete picture, but sometimes you can get a quick feel for at least one aspect of a person by their avatar (and signature, and title, etc)
