Scientists experiment the fuck out of the fruit flies. I'm sure they released them into the population and now we have a bunch of freak fruit flies flying around now.

The only part of the article I really agree with are the first three words. It's hard to comprehend how natural selection can cause generations to keep small characteristics adding up to something so specific as this. Mellowparty/badchad, care to explain?
Not really. You are assuming that the pattern on the wing has to look exactly like an ant to work. All that natural selection has done is tell you that the ant pattern seems to work BEST. A fly with a dot may be afforded some protection, while one with few more dots may have an even better chance. Eventually, the more complicated patterns have added upon each other.
Fruit flies have a very short life cycle and you can actually observe some fairly significant evolutionary changes in a fairly short time.

Mimicry is pretty common in animals and insects as well.
My other comment is that this could be a great example of pareidolia, where we tend to interpret somewhat abstract shapes as common objects/animals etc. If you saw those abstract shapes on a piece of paper, would you immediately say "those are ants?" maybe, maybe not.
I agree that it sounds like evolution (of course), but it isnt that easy for a mutation to just "cause" full images of flies on wings.
Quite interesting.

Yeah that's pretty cool but I'm thinking it just coincidentally kinda looks like an ant, not that the fruit fly evolved to use the image of an ant as camouflage. Looks pretty badass though.

Yeah, it would be interesting to see some other flies. In science "representative sample" is actually "best darn one ya got".

That's a good point.
i always thought of this as well. I've always been waiting to actually find something like this and finally it happened. If it is just a random pattern.. its still comes on as some other bug on its wing so even unsuspecting animal think theirs three bugs in one spot. Image trickery lol
Which is where intelligent design comes into play. How does the wing know to take on that form in such a way that.. unsuspecting creatures view it as a separate bug.

Yeah so did photoshop. I propose rule 4 enforcement on grounds of stupidity. All you guys should go to your local community college and take genetics 101. You'd be really surprised they teach really important things like probabilities. The rest can send me Credit cards, checks and money orders so we can buy a bunch of lottery tickets. Though cash is O.K. too I promise we'll divide the winnings fairly
