I think it was a matter of a simple soldering fix, but I thought after eight years I deserved a new pair.
I'm really leaning towards Audio Technica, not stylish at all, but I could give two shits less. From what I've read they seem like a good bet. Right now it's a toss up between them and Sennheiser. I think Shure is pretty much out of the picture now.

I've owned most of these models and none lasted for more than a year or two. Invest in Ultrasone, they are built like a tank.

I've listened to a lot of senns and IMO they all kind of suck. The exception is the 450s( or something in the 400range I forget which). They're incredible value for 50$.
For less than 1k I still like the technics best just because it has actual sub. I've never heard audio technicas though.

I have two pairs of Sennheisers. I'm listening to the HD 280 pros at this very moment. I like them a lot -- the detail and clarity is incredible. But a lot of people think they sound too clinical. I dunno, I find them to be a complete pleasure, and the isolation is simply wonderful on the bus, etc. I consider them a steal at $99 postpaid.

I've been through two pairs of those ATH M50s. Bought a pair on Amazon. They lost my package and sent me a second pair. The original package showed up a few months later.
They're okay. They're a good value for the price. You don't really want to use headphones much unless you don't value your hearing.
I got the M50s because they are cheap and decent. I mix my music on my reference monitors and use the headphones to review the placement an motion of the elements in my music. They get the job done.
One problem with them is that the ear cups are foam covered in a thin layer of bonded leather. The bonded leather begins to peel after a couple years. There is a thin layer of fabric hiding the plastic housing for the speakers. It is coated with a hydrophobic chemical of some kind. The fabric starts to peel too. Then the foam gives way and your headphones begin to fall apart. They're not worth repairing.
I almost forgot. They're closed back and provide good isolation, but they might bleed too much for your office if it is a quiet office.

I've had two pairs of Sennheisers accurate sound recording headphones. The first broke after I dropped a large guitar pedal they were plugged in to and after that the sound in the left side didn't work. The next pair are holding up for the 29.00 I spent so far. Lately I've been looking into a headphone amp because I listen to most music with headphones, anyone know if they are worth the money?

I have the M50s. They sound awesome for the price range. For comparison, I previously owned a pair of Sennheiser HD280s and the M50s destroy them. My old boss had a pair of Beyerdynamics DT770 32ohms and they sound better than the M50s. Plus, the ear cups are like clouds.

You can easily replace the ear cups yourself for like 20 dollars. Healing is correct in that they do bleed. If you are blasting it, people will be able to hear.

I'm not gonna be blasting music. I need to be able to hear my coworkers, sometimes we work with radioactive stuff in the lab and I have to take extra precautions when other people are working with it(so I gotta hear them). I just need enough sound insulation to drown out my Indian coworker's humming/singing and the sound of centrifuges spinning up. The most I would do is about 40% volume in the lab.

you are going to have trouble hearing what they are saying. you can generally hear when people are talking but it's going to be next to impossible to hear what they are saying. that's the nature of closed headphones.

I know not much about headphones but I know that the 50$ skullcandy stereo headphones are pretty solid for the price.

LOL at the guy who suggested JVC. They haven't produced anything of sonic quality since the 70's. Ultimately they are a marketing company. You wont find many audiophile singling the praises of a household name like JVC
And yea, closed back headphones won't be appropriate if you need to hear colleagues at all. If you're only playing music at a low level, then I don't believe that open backed phones will be a disturbance to others.

That's nice. Everyone has their own opinion. I'd rather not spend more than $200 on a pair of headphones. Seems silly. At least i'm not some self proclaimed expert of headphones haha. I prefer car audio much more as well.
