Edible Agaricus?

Habitat: Ireland. In grass at side of road.
Cap: 150mm diameter. Tannish colour.
Stem: 25mm diameter. White. Most of the bases broke off when I pulled them up except the little one. Very little or no yellowing.
Gills: dull pinkish brown to chocolate brown.
Spore print: in progress.
Smell: hard to describe, mealy perhaps.

Was there any yellow bruising? I hear good Agaricus specimens should smell shroomy and not bruise yellow. Bad specimens have a phenolic smell (to me they smell like something between bleach and pee), and may stain yellow. I've also heard that the smell is usually enhanced with cooking.

Agreed, but whenever I find toxic agaricus, the yellow "staining" (not bruising) is always at the base, usually on rhizomorphs. So long story short, OP, I can't tell from your photos. Next time, dig up the entire base.

Probably edible. Maybe not. As mentioned, the photo's aren't showing the necessary field markers. Yellow bruising or staining of the cap is typical in some of the best edible agaricus. But a yellow stem base indicates a poisonous species. Then there's the smell. Any sort of chemical odor that sets off the "bad" light in your olfactory senses is poisonous. But I've read that this odor isn't apparent to everyone. The cap margin od your mushroom looks like it may have been attached to a thick sheath veil but the veil on your mushroom looks thin and skirt like. Generally thick sheath veiled agaricus aren't edible and skirt veiled are. Most poisonous agaricus have a greyish coloration to the flesh or cap fibrils and yours does not. One poisonous agaricus to look out for is Agaricus hondensis. which has a thinner sheath like veil that can drop and look skirt like, no greyish colorations, the base of the stem may not be yellow and the bad odor may be very faint. Though it's said to be unmistakably foul smelling in the pan. I've never fried one.

I managed to get the base of this small one. Doesn't appear to be any staining. I have ate ones that were staining a lot (well just half a cap), but they smelled anise so I tried it anyway, and they were alright.
The spore print is brown.

Yeah those look good to me . Edible agaricus still bruise a yellowish-tan color, but that ends up fading to a dull dingey brown in time. The yellow stains at the base of inedible ones do not disappear.

No. And don't listen to anyone who thinks they do. They would need to scope it first. Lol

It's in the "Arvensis" family. That doesn't mean it's "agaricus arvensis", just that it's in that family of agaricus that have certain features. All of the arvensis family is edible. I don't care for horse mushrooms but I love princes! Both in the arvensis family. Yours looks a lot like a horse mushroom and the habitat would point that way. But as mentioned, an accurate ID would require a microscope.
