my damn dog
    #19109092 - 11/09/13 05:35 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Im really at a loss as to what to do with my pup. Hes 9 mths old, a datson and silky terrier mix. The little shit wont quit poopin in the house and barking constantly when im not around. For the pooping, which he only does when im not home, Ive tried kennel training(barking) rubbing his nose in it, beating him(discipline, not abuse), outside treatment, less food(not starving) potty pads, the works. The barking idk what to do. I mean im trying to discipline him, but he doesnt do it when im around. Neighbors are pissy and all ready called the cops once. Roomie is flipping shit. Im trying i just dont know what to do anymore.

Shock caller. Stay around if possible when he poops pick him up and bring him outside.....he'll get the picture.
Or go to the vets and get doggy tranqs

1) don't get pets when you can't handle them
2) do some research in proper dog training, maybe on a dog related forum instead of here
3) do you take the dog on walks frequently? does it get enough exercise?

Hey man. Im a kennel cleaner/vet assistant and ALOOOOT of people deal with these issues, trust me, so dont feel singled out. What I suggest is take him on a good half hour to hour walk before you leave OR as soon as you get up. It'll get all the shit out of him and being that he is a terrier, 45min of walking will wear him the fuck out. lol. so that should help with the barking issue also. The Doc I work with always says that its called |Separation Anxiety|. But you know how doctors are, always putting labels on EVERYTHING. If the walking doesn't help, his next suggestions are to get what is called ClomaCalm. Its pretty much anti anxiety, happy pills, for animals. Hope that helps man.

its COLLAR, and we are talking about a fucking terrier mix, blasphemy.. you don't get a shock collar for house training, you get a shock collar for aggressiveness/disobedient/protection  ...you send 2.0 joules to a terrier and he's going to go into cardiac arrest and have a fucking heart attack.. TRUST ME I breed Doberman Pinschers, thats when they come in handy.

..............really???? lol dont even get me started...yes they have micro tranqs, but it takes mental clarity out of the animal for long term uses.
Goldcap im not insulting your intelligence, being as though I do not know you, but do a little research(and spell check) before you just go around suggesting to electrocute and subdue an animal.. That being said, Respect, and thanks for trying.

He probably needs more exercise and needs to be walked at a heel to show him who is the alpha.

You need some more patience man.

DON'T use a shock collar
DON'T rub the dog nose in shit
DON'T hit the dog, this teaches fear not discipline. You'll end up with a dog that may want to bite you someday.

You need to get the dog on a feeding/potty schedule. Dogs are creatures of habit. Same time every morning, potty-feed-potty. Give the dog a treat everytime it shits outside. Same time every evening, potty, feed, potty. Treats for shitting outside.

*my bad, my reply is intended to op*

I agreed on not using the shock collar, that should only be used in invisible fences to keep the dog from running away.

A dog can only think in terms of the next time it is going to be feed. You need to teach it, better at an early age, what is right and wrong.

This.  Get a bag of those stinky Dog Treats that look like beef jerky, and take the dog out regularly.  When you take him out ask if he wants a treat.  Then when you see him shit or piss, bring him back in and make him sit, then give him the treat.

Don't give the mutt anything if he didn't use the bathroom.  Pretty soon the dog will associate using the bathroom outside with getting a treat. That mutt will hold his shit in all day so he can get that treat.  It'll start going to the door when it needs to use the bathroom.  It may try to fake it sometimes to get a treat, but don't give one unless it does the job.

Rubbing the dog's nose in shit or beating it makes it bitter and angry.  Positive reinforcement and learning is >> negative reinforcement and learning.

OK, my opinion of the rubbing the dog's nose in shit thing is that it evolved from an actual useful training tool.

When the dog poops anywhere other than where you want him to go, clean it up with a cloth, and place it where he is supposed to go. Next, take him there, let him smell it, and praise or treat him. He'll get the idea pretty quick.

Also, sorry to get on the spelling nazi thing again, but Op, it's your dog, and you should know that it's a dachshund and not a Datsun, lol. That's a japanese pickup truck
