Fungus found on beech stem- ID please
    #19108827 - 11/09/13 01:56 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all,

I found this fungus growing in a tuft about 12-14 feet up a beech (Fagus sylvatia) stem. The mushrooms are growing out of an old pruning wound/ cavity. Found in northern UK.

Gills:
Decurrent, brown/ yelow, fairly growded.

Stem:
Thick, fibrous, eccentric, scaly.

Cap:
Large (bigger than a hand span), scaly, broken up into square/ rectangular plates. Brown with yellow flesh inderneath. Large and obvious depression in the centre.

Spore print color:
Awaiting spore print- may not get one as I fear the mushrooms are too old. Staining on the gills indicates spores may be brown.

Bruising:
Internal yellow flesh bruises a dark brown colour

Other information:
Please see pictures below.

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

Cheers

Looks like old Gymnopilus or Pholiota.

Hmm it seems a bit big to be any of those species? Could it be Hypsizygus spp?

fibers on the stem and cap, make me think this is more likely to be a gymnopilus, gyms can be big.

Looks like a Pholiota to me.  If you wet your finger and touch the cap surface, is it slimy?
