Bulk Substrate Question

Lets say that not enough poo is aquired to mix with the straw AND have enough for a poo top layer. Would it be OK to mix the straw and poo, pasteurize, mix with spawn, lay in a tray, and put plastic on top of that? Is the poo layer that necessary? Or would it be better to pasturize the poo in another bag, thus letting some of the nutrients leech out into the straw, and still maintaining enough for a decent covering of poo/spawn? Thanks

If you don't have a top poo layer just make sure the straw is not sticking up out of the substrate. This could draw in contams more easily than if you had the top poo layer. But you don't have to have one if you don't have enough.
