Nobody's perfect, and in his case, it probably would have been better if he hadn't brought his children into this world. While I agree that family life is important, so is making the world a better place. There are plenty of other people with worse family lives who have not made the positive impact on the world that he did.

I am not a leary hater at all. He said some nice things. But did he really make the world a better place? He sure didn't make the world better for his kids it seems.

We don't know the circumstances surrounding Leary's family life.
Either way, not listening to Leary because of how his family life turned out is throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Expand your idea of what a family is, and you'll see that he did a world of good for his extended human family. Say he had four children (I don't know the exact number). What's the life of four people compared to millions upon millions of people?
As for Dr. King, he was an adulterer, but his wife still loved him and he got to spend a good amount of time with his children although he was absent doing work for the human family for stretches of time. His family approved of and understood the sacrifices he was making, the ultimate one being his life.

We know that he took lots of drugs. We know he was very much into hedonism. At the expense of his families well being it would seem. We know that two very close family members commited suicide.

I said that he spoke some very nice words. But to say that he was christ reincarnated is a bit much.

Defining family will not "make" me see that he did a "world" of good for the world. That is disputable.
I think drug use and "saving the world" should take second place to your own family. You are responsible for preparing them to cope with this life. They are your ony true responsibility.

King is a good example of a man with flaws. He, however, was not a hedonistic drug user.

Thankfully the great ones who have benefited society thought differently. One thing you aren't taking into account in your thinking is that those families are also part of the same society and reap the benefits of their father's work just like anyone else. If Dr. King had been my Dad I would have gladly traded him seeing my ballgames for freedom from oppression for all black citizens. I would be proud of his sacrifice and I would personally consider it selfish to do otherwise. Some might feel otherwise, but these are my feelings.

His daughter killed her boyfriend and then herself. his son would not talk to him for nearly 20 years. One of his wives killed herself. How did his family benefit from all of his drug use.

Who is talking about ballgames?
He was a pretty decent father as far as I know. Not the wreck that learys family was.
I see nothing wrong with making certain sacrifices to accomplish an important goal. But leary was a self centered, drug using hedonist. We are not talking about a man who sacrificed his life for the betterment of humanity!

When taking into concideration the idea that Leary's short-comings as a father somehow stain his image as a great teacher and person, you really have to concider which is the greater good, just as a few other people have stated. In my opinion Leary's postive impact on the world far outweighs any failure as a father. He was a father figure to more than just his children.
In keeping with the christian theme started earlier in the thread by pointing the humor in such a closed minded article I'll post a verse from the bible that this conversation reminded me of:
"While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, 'Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.' He replied to him, 'Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?' Pointing to his disciples, he said, 'Here are my mother and my brothers.'" -Matthew 12:46-12:49 (NIV)
This seems to be an interesting viewpoint to take into concideration when debating Leary's sucess as a father. Just for the record I don't formally support the bible or it's teachings, not to say I'm againt it either.

I view the pleasure of it all as a pleasant side effect, not the reason I do them. Leary did LSD to expand his consciousness. It was something he truly believed in. Not just for the pleasure of it.

And as has also been stated, what greater good did he accomplish?
If a man neglects his own family (especially his children) it makes me suspicious of him as a person. That is how I feel.

Jesus was not referring to children here. What was that other scripture, the one where he said not to forbid the little children to come to him? For such is the kingdom of heaven.

First of all, it is extremely pleasurable to "expand your mind",is it not?
Also, The man was also a heavy drinker during periods in his life indicating a desire to get fucked up.
I never said it was just for the pleasure of it anyway.

Yes, mind-expansion can be extremely pleasurable. It can also be extremely disturbing for some. But event the bad trips can be helpful learning experiences. Leary was trying to start a revolution in consciousness, which might have succeeded if the government hadn't done so much to stop it.
