Help me pick out some headphones
    #19107085 - 11/08/13 06:31 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Alright, so I loves me some sound quality. I can't put up with any of that SkullCandy shit or other cheap bullshit that is bass overload with everything else all washed out. I wouldn't call myself an audiophile, but I like to hear every element/instrument of music, not some sloppy version of the song I'm listening to.

I'm looking for some headphones that make music sound... Fun but crisp and defined.

My price range is about $100-$150. I want over ear headphones, fuck in ear headphones, they never work for me. I have some Klipsch in ear thangs and I can barely put up with them, they're so hard to seat in the ear properly.

I don't listen to FLAC files, I do V0 VBR mp3. I'm not a producer, so I don't need those headphones with stupid sound detail. I just like to hear everything while it still sounds... fun. Also, I need something closed, can't do open, gotta respect the coworkers. So what do yous sound folks recommend?

Here's what I'm considering:

Shure SHR440
Audio-Technia ATH-M30
Audio-Technia ATH-M50

Any other suggestions are welcome. Grado is out because they are all open from what I've seen.

Much appreciate! Great times!

I have six pairs of headphones around my home studio, and for the low price bracket that youre buying in, I would say that the Sennheiser HD215 closed back represent the best value/quality ratio.

This is a tough topic.  I would try to demo as many as you can to nail down your preference.  Here are some less bassy options that seem to meet your criteria.

Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR7506-Professional-Diaphragm-Headphone/dp/B000AJIF4E/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1383961961&sr=1-1&keywords=Sony+MDR

The Sony MDR's are an old design.  They have been around forever but they are regarded as an industry standard in many ways.  I would describe them as a transparent option, they don't color the music, for better or worse.  But you will notice every detail.  I think they are a very good value for the money..

Another option that comes to mind is the AKG K550
http://www.amazon.com/AKG-Acoustics-Closed-Back-Reference-Headphones/dp/B005CNR7B0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383962599&sr=8-1&keywords=AKG+K+550

A little out of your price range but I have personally demoed these..  They are most noted for haveing a very open sound for a closed design and are very easy on the base.

As long as you are sticking with closed designs you probably wont run into an under amping problem, hoverer you might want to look into a DAC/amp combo anyway as they can really make any headphone come alive.  Its not necessarily for louder licensing, its for the cleaner signal produced by the DAC/Amp.

This may be a little bit higher then your wanting, but the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 80ohms fucking kill it for me. They're ~$230, closed phones, super fucking comfy to wear all day and sound great.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-770-Pro-80-Closed-Studio-Headphones-102512019-i1126937.gc

Little bass heavy - not boomy, it's tight, but the level swells up a bit down low - at least that low end extension is there. EQ out what your not satisfied with.

Now they have a 250ohm and a 600?ohm versions as well. The sound signatures of these might be a bit tamer on that low end. not sure haven't looked into it really. but the 250ohm can be had for ~$160.

I have Grado SR-80's that are killer also. Not nearly as comfy and def don't hit those growling depths that a lot of electronic music that I'm into hits, but I love em for rock.

The DAC/Amp makes a big difference. Not so much on the DT's as it does on the Grado's. But it's def a noticeable difference.

that's my 2c/
Now I'm ganna find this dead mouse cuz that fucker staaaaaaank.

audio technica's are great. I'm on my second pair and the first one lasted me about 8 years. Took them camping, on planes, slept with them, smashed them and finally they started dying. I think it was a matter of a simple soldering fix, but I thought after eight years I deserved a new pair.

Funny you mention this because I was looking for a pair to feel the music  a little more...after much research I bought Audio Technica ATH-M50 and it came with a equalizer for like 150 bucks on Amazon.  Holy crap they are the best for the price and sound like a much higher priced pair.

You now have received what is officially known as TMI.  Go to the store and see how you like the fit.  That is probably the most important thing once you surpass the tin can level of fidelity.
