What kind of puffball is this?
All white inside, found in our lawn.
Gem-studded.

Lycoperdon, try comparing to Lycoperdon perlatum.

I think it is that. But it is so confusing, the gem-studded one's all look alike to me.

Most can be ruled out by location and macroscopic details. Can you describe the spines, any bruising, scent?

They bruise?? No bruising though.
We are in Oklahoma, found in the yard. The spines are white and dark at the tip.

Are these an active species? I've heard some are.

No, none are active and no active species of Lycoperdon is known. What was meant was the flesh of fungi can change colors/shades when damaged, this is an example of a feature sometimes useful for identification.

#5 down, says they are active, that is why I was curious.

"some puffballs are psychedelic in nature. the smooth ones do not seem to be, though. the rough outer shell of a puffball will indicate a highly psychedelic property.
"In North America, puffballs possess a certain ritual and medicinal importance that may indicate a possible psychoactivity. The Blackfeet call them ka-ka-toos, "falling stars" or "dusty stars." They used the pleasantly scented species to make necklaces and decorated their tepees with representations of these fungi, considering them symbols of the life that arose from the earth. They sniffed the spores to treat nosebleeds Qohnston 1970, 303 f.*). They burned Lycoperdon species as magical incense to drive off spirits (Burk 1983,55). The Cherokee used the common puffball (Lycoperdon perlatum Pers."

I am adding this so that no readers will confuse the smooth, edible puffball mushrooms with the more potent lycoperdon puffball, which will set you a-trippin' "

Well, that's certainly news to me! Not sure what to make of that, but I can't find much information to substantiate those claims. Interesting nonetheless.

The Cherokee used the common puffball (Lycoperdon perlatum Pers)."

So they're symbolic (makes sense; they certainly look cool enough, and the way they spring suddenly out of the ground apparently from nothing doesn't hurt either), were thought to have a (pretty mundane) medical use, and have been burned as incense. Interesting anthropologically, but in no way does any of this imply that they're psychoactive.

Yup, just make sure there is no yellowing of the inside mass.

Interesting story, but to my knowledge absolutely no truth regarding psychoactivity. At any rate, those are edible puffballs.
