    #19106434 - 11/08/13 04:05 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Hi all

I've seen teks for fractional sterilization for about every possible grain except wbr?

Anyone has every tried something like that? Brown rice grain without a PC?

Thanks

Fractional sterilization fails 90% of the time.

If you cannot PC grains, steam them for about 8 hours.

That being said, not sure about whole rice...should be able to be just steamed.

BRF can just be steamed, but I dunno.

They fail 90% of the time... That's good to know....
Thanks for your help, I'm thinking about what you said and it's helping me in my decision to buy a PC...

Regardless of sterilization method, whole brown rice is a poor spawn choice.  Too starchy.  There are other, more suitable grains available.

I agree, there is a lot of prep needed with this grain...

Now though I'm about to prepare some agar for plates with no PC... So I hope I find a way to succeed...

Assuming I want to try without a PC....

Do you have experiences with many mediums when you say this? Of course there would be things like wbs millet rye in one category, then wbr or grass seed in another, than popcorn in another...

And also you would have agar mediums

Because in all honesty, I see successful fractional sterilization teks working fine on things like pop corn and agar, but I've never seen an example on a different medium...

And regarding the idea of steaming them for 8hrs... Does this, IYE, work best with a certain kind of grain/agar?

You can technically steam sterilize agar and it should be fine.....don't know why anyone would try fractional sterilization on that.

But I can link you to hundreds of threads where fractional sterilization either failed, or the OP never posted back, most likely because it failed.

I have never tried fractional sterilization, because I was serious about this hobby and bought a PC.

It should not matter how long contams took to show up.

The fact that they showed up at all deems it a failure.
