First time with coir... fruiting not fully colonized substrate (PICS)
    #19106396 - 11/08/13 03:57 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I inoculated rye berries and spawned to coir later. The colonization of the coir is not finished but after waiting for two weeks I put the cakes in the FC. Do you guys think it will turn out fine or will it be contaminated?

What steps did you take in spawning.  Did you mix sub and spawn good.  What's was your mix and ratio?  Two weeks is a long time to only see that much in such small trays

Yes, but maybe the coir didn't have good field capacity. I squeezed out most of the water from it before mixing with the spawn. I also put a layer of coir on top of it. The bottom seems to be colonized good but not the top.

Next time Don't put a layer of coir on top. In my experience it take way to long to colonize. Having some exposed grains won't hurt a thing

I'll remember that. I think I put too much of it on top and it might be a bit dry. Hoping for the best anyways.

If you had not put that top layer on there those would probably be pinning

They should have been covered with foil while colonizing. They're probably dried out

Yeah mist them real well and cover them with foil until they finish up. Poke a few little holes in the foil for ge

Cube are very resiliant. They'll dig in and find a way to fruit. Just be patient

Hi guys... I tried covering the cakes with tin foil for a couple of days and today when I was going to check on them I noticed there was pins on all the cakes.
Some of them look mutated. There is probably some kind of contamination going on... which sucks, obviously. So what should I do now?

OP are you keeping your substrate in a sgfc during the spawn run?
If so you should let it colonize  to 100% Before placing it in the sgfc.
If the perlite I see is wet and you have holes in the tub or it is putting your
Substrate in to fruiting conditions way to early. That could be the reason you
Are seeing pins before 100% colinazation.

Yeah... I had very little spawn so most of the substrate is coir. And the spore syringes where 4+ years old. I should have added vermiculite but was to lazy to get any. And fruiting began before the substrate was fully colonized.

Update:

They are growing pretty slow, it's been almost three days since they started pinning and some of the trays are growing faster than the others. I'm hoping to get a couple of good prints out of this grow at least.

Holy shit, I had forgotten how much it sucks to harvest these things...
I've only harvested one of the trays and took a couple of prints from it.
The fresh weight from that trey was 250 grams. I hope it will flush again.

After harvesting the first tray:

Four more harvested:

Fruits from four of the trays:

I wasn't expecting a good yield but this is fine for me. Every tray has less than 0.5 quarts of spawn in them. It will be interesting to see if I'll get second flushes but I doubt it. I enjoyed using coir, next time I'll add vermiculite and make sure it fully colonizes before fruting.

those look good man!  I have those same uncolonized holes on surface when I use a top layer of sub sprinkled on:

and when I don't use that top layer, just an even mix:

needless to say, as the others have pointed out, that top layer not required, and it takes longer to reach fruiting conditions. but ur trays look awesome either way!

Not bad OP, not bad. A testament to the resilience of cubes, and how forgiving a sub coir is. You will do even better next time, just don't expect those containers to be in one piece by that point

You did get some food, but your results will be better next time if you make sure you do not have bacterial contaminants in your spawn jars

This is usually the cause of splotchy colonization and mediocre performance like you have here.

I suspected bacterial contaminants too but it turned out fine however. Got almost 2,5 oz after drying the fruits from 5 trays. Tray 6 is drying now. This is from less than 3 quarts of spawn altogether. For me this is good, my last grow was 3 years ago and this is the first time I tried coir.

Dried fruits:

OP I just noticed; why are there no holes in your SGFC? That perlite you have in there is not going to humidify anything without holes and your mushies look like they could use a bit more FAE.

you should dunk your trays and see if the next flush is better than your last one  (I'm not a fan as i feel as if this gives contaminants access to the grow, but if your last flush is "shit" then why not? )

Fanning is not a replacement for constant FAE.

You would need to fan several times per hour.

I decided to harvest all trays except one. I'll do that one tomorrow.

It was not a big yield but I am still satisfied, got some beautiful fruits.

Just finished drying 2nd flush. Weight is 1 oz dry fruits.

Total yield from this grow so far is around 3.5 oz dry fruits.

I think it's good for 2.8 quartz of spawn but it could have been better.

Third flush is catastrophically bad, I don't even know why I bother.

Painfully slow growth and the pin set is a fucking joke.

Fourth flush:

What a joke, right? Barely anything growing.

I gonna let these mature and throw that shit away.

Got 4 oz dried from this grow from all flushes. Very potent stuff.

All trays have flushed at least 5 times now. Some 6.

I'm getting tiny harvests, like 1 oz of fresh shrooms from every tray.

When should I trash them? They still produce small amounts of fruits now.

My total yield from this grow is a little bit more than 4 oz dry.
