Tupac Shakur
    #19102520 - 11/07/13 07:49 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

The recent Russel Brand thread inspired me to post one of the more interesting interviews I've seen, with another misrepresented celebrity.

This is a 1988 interview with Tupac Shakur where he extensively outlines his views of politics and society. This was before Tupac was a famous rapper, when he was a working-class, 17 year old student highly involved in community service.

What do you guys think of this?

Seems like he learned a lot from his mother being that she was a political activist

I agree. If Tupac had any sort of privilege other than good looks and a penis, it was a smart mom. Though those things don't really hold a candle to his marginalization as a poor, fatherless African-American living in the crack era.

To me it seems like he had some pretty valid and insightful concerns regarding America as he experienced it, and many of them appear to be relevant today.

It's sad that after this interview he had to endure so much more turmoil (including police brutality, possible accidental killing of a 6 year old buy, a false sexual assault accusation/conviction, a nonfatal shooting) only to get shot to death at 25. I believe that he could have made an enormous impact politically by now if he was alive today.

It'll be interesting to see how many members and which members will take the time to listen to and give their input on the concerns of an African American youth in comparison to a middle-aged Caucasian.

Not only relevant, but also very important issues that receive little discussion.

The public school system has long needed an overhaul, and the age of this interview shows that.  Presidents and other politicians preaching one thing, swearing they only want to help, and then doing another, or just completely disregarding the needs of the people.  Many of the things he speaks on still need changing.

Tupac is an interesting person, especially once you analyze his views.  A lot of his earlier music was political.  In fact I'd say it all was.  But the incidents you mentioned seemed to distract him.  Thus Thug Life was born, and I believe it ultimately killed him.

Looking at this Tupac, at age 17, who didn't use any foul language in this interview, it's hard to believe it's the same person in the interview below:

The same underlying belief system is still there, but there is much more anger.  But because of the latter interview, I do think he would be much more involved in politics if he were still alive.

I also find it INCREDIBLY hilarious that Russel Brand got hated on in the other thread because he's an actor/ex-junkie, when, as Tupac pointed out, we've had an actor for PRESIDENT.  Shit, we had Arnold as governor of California.
