home compost
    #19104388 - 11/08/13 08:43 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I have a compost bin that regularly gets a lot of food items and a bit of yard waste.is this suitable for a substrate? Does compost need to be mixed with certain items or Is compost simply compost? Any tek on determining this( I'm sure there is, I've searched to no avail)
Can I get a link if so?
Thanks for the input

I don't know the answer to this, but I think it would be cool if you try and use it as a substrate. Just scale down the grow in case it doesn't work.

Mushroom species such as ps. cubensis or pan cyans benefit from a non-composted horse manure or straw substrate so the mushroom mycelium can do the composting itself that way they have food to consume. The mushroom's purpose is to help decompose what its growing on, and it breaks down the substrate, creating all sorts of enzymes and microbes which are very beneficial to plants' nutrient absorbtion in the immediate area. Someone correct me if im wrong.

If you use compost for a cube grow, use horse dung/straw compost as thats what they themselves compost in nature. IMO growing on compost defeats the whole purpose of feeding your mycelium a bulk substrate. Since a composted substrate is already 'eaten' by other organisms first. Someone correct me if im wrong.

Use your food/yard waste compost in your garden. When using horse manure as a bulk substrate, dried up clumps of it are broken up into a dry fibery dung powder, mixed with verm and gypsum while dry, brought to field capacity with moisture, pasteurized at 140-160F for an hour, and mixed or layered with colonized spawn at about a 1:2 or 1:3 spawn:substrate ratio.

Though it wouldn't hurt to spawn to some food/yard compost, just more effective if you used the proper bulk substrate. I'd imagine the food compost being nothing beneficial, just causing higher chances of bacteria/contam.
