I don't think that it's chaga. Chaga grows off of birch trees and is an orange-brown color inside.

It looks like Daldinia concentrica. I'm not especially familiar with it, but I've seen it on hardwoods.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

It does grow on other trees but I've read that only chaga growing from birch trees have medicinal qualities.
You could have a just forming polypore:shrug:
Is the inside a similar color to the photo I posted?

As I understand, Chaga is always medicinal no matter what tree it grows on.  However, Birch is the only tree that produces betulin, and the chaga mushroom converts the betulin into betulinic acid - this is said to be the most important compound in the mushroom.

Check this write up from ChagaMountain
The active constituents of Chaga are thought to be a combination of Amino Acids, Beta Glucans, Betulinic Acid, Calcium, Chloride, Copper, Dietary Fiber, Enzymes, Flavonoids, Germanium, Inotodiols, Iron, Lanosterol, Manganese, Magnesium, Melanin, Pantothenic Acid, Phenols, Phosphorus, Phytonutrients, Polysaccharides, Potassium, Saponins, Selenium, Sodium, Sterols, Trametenolic Acid, Tripeptides, Triterpenes, Triterpenoids, Vanillic Acid, Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Vitamin D2 (Ergosterol), Vitamin K and Zinc.

The most valued property in Chaga is betulinic acid, however, in order for Chaga to be effective, it’s imperative that Chaga is harvested from only birch trees. Birch trees are the ONLY trees that contain betulinic acid from which Chaga grows on. We at Chaga Mountain, Inc., wild harvest Chaga from ONLY birch trees. Chaga Mushrooms harvested from birch trees converts the betulin present in the bark of the birch into a soluble and ingestible form of betulinic acid. Please read the importance of betulinic acid on our Health Benefits Tab.

Old thread but I'm researching chaga and would like to add that I've read it can grow on other hardwoods but it's almost never noticed because it grows narrowly between the bark fissures, apparently like you have photographed here. Only on birch does it produce the large bulbous growth.
