How long has it been fully colonized?

Additionally you break it up and shake it, wait about 48 hours and see if it all recovers, if so it is most likely clean

If you have a better looking jar use it instead

I had three fully colonized jars, used two of them on the thirty g2g - this is the only fully colonized, the others are a few days out.

I do not want this to consolidate, I would like to g2g while the growth is still in full stride.

So far 1 yes 1 no 1 suggestion.

Did you open it to smell it because then it's not sterile anymore and will contam the rest of your jars. If you're smelling it through the filter then you're probably good to go.

:whathesaid:

first thing i thought of when u said smells good.  i usually cant even smell my mycelium if i was to just open a jar anyway.  i have to break it up before the aroma is really released.  let alone, smelling it unbroken up through the filter.

I always thought "how would i go about smelling a grain master to check if its clean without compromising its sterility?" i guess this is the thread to ask that question.

AFAIK after you shake it you can try though the GE to get a sniff but other than that there's no good way unless you can afford a LFH and then you'll smell it as the air blows towards your face after you open the jar

i have a Laminar Flow Hood so, thats how i do.  But i can usualy smell through the polyfil, and if i recall, when i used tyvek i could smell through that as well, after a shake.  otherwise, if not, and using a still air box, i gather you could always maybe pour a few grains onto your hand inside the box and take out your hand and smell them like that.  with a glovebox however, i guess you just gotta smell through filter or take your chances.

I like the few in the hand idea with a SAB I might give that a try. This is the sole reason why I don't g2g all the time. I always try to do agar to jar now just to be extra sure. My pc only holds 4 quart jars so if I do 1:10 and it all goes bad that's 3 wasted cycles.

I smelled it through a layer of tyvek,

I'll tell you how.

I placed a nostril on the 1/4 inch hole.

I plugged the other.

I inhaled.

I have a great sense of smell. And the other jars, the two i've
used so far, took no breaking up.. They funked up my little
lab the moment I opened them, it made me smile

Regardless,

What Am I looking at, I havent seen this before,

You think I am good to go?

:awkwardconfusion:

You have the motivation and resources it seems to find out either way  ! If it don't smell bad do it !

I was taught young believe none of what you hear and only half what you see so I think the smell test is the finality .:headbang3:
