Oyster spore collection turned BRF Tek experiment
    #19103384 - 11/07/13 10:58 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So as the name suggests...

Due to a lack of rain I purchased some oyster mushrooms from the supermarket with the goal of spore collection in mind.

I sterilised some jars and put the mushrooms in them covered them up and left them for a couple of days. Upon my return I saw there were no spores but the mushrooms had started to grow white masses. It didn't look like mould and it got me thinking...

This is what I found.

I assumed it was some form of mycelium despite its cloudy appearance. I figured I can either do nothing and it will die or try and cultivate it... So I planted some in the garden and will see how that goes but I also decided to see if I could use the new growth to "inoculate" a brf tek.

I made up 8  half jars of mix and sterilised them too, even though I knew they would become contaminated once opened and fiddled with.

So once sterilised I cut up the mushrooms with their growths and placed them in various spots to make 4 full jars. That was a week ago.

I am now looking at lots of contamination.

As mentioned these appeared doomed from the start but we are in a bit of a drought so what the heck right?

There is a glimmer of hope in all this... 1 jar is contamination free as far as I can see and (!!!) is growing mycelium.

There is one other jar that appears to have mycelium growing but it's hard to tell due to the nature of the glass, it also has small amounts of contamination :frown:

So, with the contaminated jars I am intending to bury their contents to see if the growths which still appear to be growing will fare better outside in the garden where the contams will pose less of a direct threat.

As for my 1 jar of successful contam free growth I'll keep y'all posted.

Has anyone else seen or heard of something similar??

thanks for reading
