2 mushrooms (newbie)
    #19102153 - 11/07/13 06:34 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

1. Shroom 1
Found at the base of a pine tree in the woods in North Carolina. Smells like the mushrooms that are edible, which I guess is the regular shrooms scent?

2. Shroom 2

Found on a dead oak tree stump.

You need to describe the mushrooms in more detail. Include the following information:

* Habitat (where [woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude] and what [soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?)] does it grow on)
    * Characteristics of the gills (color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc)
    * Characteristics of the stem (length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc)
    * Characteristics of the cap (diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc)
    * Spore print color (very important!)
    * Color that the mushroom bruises
    * Scent of the mushroom
    * Anything else you might find important

Ok I will do my best:

Mushroom 1
Habitat: in a small clearing under a canopy of trees in eastern NC, at the base of a large living pine tree.
Gills: White gills not attached to stem
Stem: 4 inch stem in length; 3/4 inch in diameter, white, solid, and thick, smooth feeling but looks sort of wrinkled.
Cap: 5 inch diameter cap, smooth, white with some brown around the edges, convex
Spore Print: do not have a sporeprint but am willing to do if necessary
Scent: smells like raw mushrooms that go on a salad
Additional info: some of the gills dont quite even reach the center; feels slightly sticky/slimy

Mushroom 2
Habitat: Found next to a dead oak tree stump in my front yard (eastern NC)
Gills: brown not attached gills
Stem: on the thin side, about 1/3 inch diameter, 3 inches long solid, white
Cap: 2 1/4 inches diameter, brown, feels like the one above, convex
Spore Print: no spore print but can do one if necessary
Bruising: darker color brown
Scent: no scent
Additional info: it looks like it is a bit weather worn

I hope this will help. If not ill do the spore prints. Thank you for your time.

they both look suspiciously like Pluteus cervinus to me.  try a spore print, if its pink look at the Pluteus group.  does it smell like radishes? thats another clue.

All right here is the spore print of them. I just cut the stems off and left them on top of a piece of paper with the same covering over both. Hope that wont matter.

The prints appear to be regular to light brown. I don't see any purple. I don't remember what radishes smell like, but it smells like a raw salad mushroom from the salad bar.

Compare the lighter colored individual to Pluteus pesatus.

"Mycological pink" is not quite what I would normally consider pink. Which reminds me of a story: I was visiting a friend, and the person who'd been living in what was now the guest room had left several spore prints hung on the walls, labeled by species. And one of them was labeled Chlorophyllum molybdites. And it was plainly, obviously, without a doubt, a color I would have called "orange". This had me quite worried for a while until I got in touch with the person who'd collected it and he confirmed that I'm not color-blind and "mycological green" really is the color I'd normally call "green"; it had just faded to a completely different color over the course of a year.
