My first time seeing a water snake I was actually terrified and I ran. I was about 9 and had been told stories of water moccasins chasing people.

Hehe. I was afraid of snakes when I was a kid, too. I started catching them after watching Steve Irwin do it on TV. The first time I caught a northern water snake, I wasn't positive that it was one. I was pretty young at the time. I was holding it by the tail and it struck me in the hand with like two if its teeth. Afterwards someone told me that it was a water moccasin. I freaked out for a second, thinking I got bit by a venomous snake, but I was pretty sure cottonmouths didn't live this far north, and they don't.

I was actually fascinated by snakes when I was younger. It was that experience that caused me to research the snakes in my area. It used to be my hobby to look for as many different snakes I could.

That's funny. Back in Dallas when I was younger there would be stories every summer about mountain lion sightings in our neighborhood. We lived in the fucking suburbs.
Dumbasses were seeing bobcats and calling them mountain lions
Pretty drastic difference there.

Same here. I used to spend countless hours in the creek and exploring abandoned old barns -- flipping over boards and shit looking for snakes.

I used to do it all the time, I still will occasionally lift up a board or a few rocks when I am out looking for mushrooms. Just to see what kind of snakes may inhabit that area.

Me too. Those poor northern water snakes, getting butchered because of human ignorance.
Yea but brown water snakes are their own kind of mean aggressive pricks and they will bite you as soon as look at ya.

Resembles a corn snake to me. But it could be several different species. The best way to Identify a snake is by its head and pupils sometime patterns and color.
