A 22-year-old kid from Washington who was locked up for smoking weed died in his jail cell after guards ignored his food allergies.
According to the New York Daily News, Michael Saffioti pleaded for help from his cell at Snohomish County Jail after eating oatmeal that triggered his fatal dairy allergy on July 2, 2012, but was ignored by guards until it was too late.
His family is claiming in a $10 million lawsuit against the county that Michael told guards about his condition many times, who insisted the food was safe to eat.
“Our theory is that they absolutely knew about Michael’s medical needs,” Cheryl Snow, an attorney for Saffioti’s mother, told local news station KIRO-7.
“We know that he asked questions and made inquiries and he was assured the oatmeal in the food was safe for eating,” she said.
Saffioti, from the Seattle suburb of Mukilteo, was fatally allergic to milk and suffered from severe asthma.
His family told the station that his allergy was so extreme that he often asked girls what they ate before kissing them.
One day before his death, Saffioti turned himself into Lynnwood police for failing to show up to court for being busted with pot.
Michael’s mother, Rose, said her son would use marijuana along with various other anti-anxiety medications to cope with the stress caused by his allergy.
He had been to Snohomish County several times before from abusing drugs as a teen.
According to the lawsuit, Saffioti was told he would be placed in the jail’s medical ward, where guards knew about his condition due to his previous stays.
Former inmates used to call Michael “Bubble Boy” because his food would always be wrapped in plastic to avoid cross-contamination.
This time, however, Michael was placed among the general population.
“He was scared,” his mother told The Associated Press last year. “I said, ‘You are doing the right thing. They are going to take care of you.’ He said, ‘I have a bad feeling that they are not going to take me seriously.’”
In the video broadcast on KIRO-7 taken from the jail, Saffioti is seen talking with guards while holding a tray of food.
He then joins other inmates at a table and digs into his oatmeal.
Minutes later, Michael is back at the guard’s desk, desperately taking hits from an inhaler.
He pleaded to see a nurse, the lawsuit says, but was sent to his cell instead.
The video shows Michael flailing around in his cell in a severe allergic reaction. He repeatedly hit his call button, but was ignored.
“This video shows Michael clearly made his needs apparent, that his needs were ignored,” Snow said.
“Once he suffered distress he was further ignored.”
A little over 30 minutes later, Michael was found unconscious in his cell.
Medical staff tried to resuscitate him, but Michael was pronounced dead later that day at Providence Regional Medical Center.
He died from bronchial asthma triggered by his milk allergy.
Rose filed the $10 million lawsuit in October claiming there was a “systemic failure to provide adequate medical care” to her son.

Fucking outrageous. Of course Snohomish County goes and blames the lack of nurses in the jail, even though this whole ordeal mostly has to do with incompetence in law enforcement and fucked drug laws.
No person belongs in a cage for cannabis. Those pigs who ignored and killed Michael reserved themselves a special place in hell.

Michael Saffioti is only one of at least eight people who have died in that jail in the last few years. http://www.heraldnet.com/article/20130821/BLOG41/130829983

This guy is me just different mother different life. I'm allergic to wheat,soy,rice,corn,oranges,tomatoes,bananas..I swear I could see this happening to me. I fucking wouldn't eat any of that damn food they give me. Every bit of it would have wheat in it. Things like this make me want to kill motherfuckers. Those cops deserve to be in prison for the rest of there life or death. This poor kid could've been a great man but his life was cut short, He stills amounts to much more then any of you mother fucking pigs. What kind of person would do this to any human being? No person at all. Those pigs are going to die a pathetic lonely life cause no one wants to be around them cause they have no regard for anyone except themselves. Fuck you..fuck you............FUCK YOU..

Honestly, if someone has a fatal milk allergy it shouldn't come as a surprise if they die.

Well, I saw no mention of the word "fatal" in this article. "Extreme," yes. But many people with milder lactose allergies could die from ingesting milk given enough time. Likewise, no comments here use the word "surprised. " What's your point, really? Maybe that we shouldn't be surprised if such a person dies at the hands of the police? Maybe.
This guy went 22 years with his condition. I think he deserves more credit for that.

The title is misleading. he wasnt in jail for smoking pot, he was originally given a ticket for possesion of marijuana. he was let go. he later missed his court date. anytime you miss a court date there is a warrant for your arrest issued. he turned himself in on this warrant for missing his court date. Yes, it is absurd that he was arrest for having marijuana, but if he showed up at court, he wouldnt have died.

another friend had his insulin pump taken away from him he almost died. he won a lawsuit against them though bought a restaurant with the money he won... he got raided by the feds fro selling cocaine out of the restaurant lol

As incompetent as the cops are, you could probably kill them at home and get away with it.

Don't make assumptions, though. I've been arrested on a warrant for not appearing in court before. You know why? Because I didn't know I was supposed to appear (I had never been through that kind of thing before, and it was not properly explained to me) and the summons was sent to an address I had not lived at in years.
In fact, I've seen that happen to me a few times with court documents. And it makes no sense whatsoever, when 10 different goddamned government agencies, including the DMV and the probation department (...you know, the one that's in the court house) have my most recent address, but they can't manage to mail a "hey, you're due in court" letter to an address I've actually lived at within the last ten goddamned years, and I don't find out I was supposed to be in court until I get pulled over for some bullshit petty reason, and I suddenly find myself being handcuffed by a state trooper.
So yeah, shit happens.
Just saying.....
