2x id request gymnopilus and unknown
    #19101743 - 11/07/13 05:03 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

#1 Im hoping this to be my first ever gymnopilus species, spore printing now.

Spore print on foil coming soon

habitat was on field of wood chips out in the open.

#2 found growing from forest debri along path nearby to conifer trees.

Spore print coming soon

smell is almost undescribable, not pleasant but not too bad either

feels kind of slimy to touch but doesnt leave residue on finger
some smaller specimens have redish brown tinge to cap and some have redish brown on the stem.

That gymnopilus looks quite similar to Hessler's concept of G. luteofolius, except that they're not clearly purple in the context.

Thats what species I thought they looked like too but i have 0 real time experience finding gyms so i wouldnt know. What is the best way to tell if they are an active gym? Put them in the fridge overnight and hope for bruising? does luteofolius usually bruise at all?

The 'luteofolius' we have here is not much like that.

The best way to tell an active gym this [or better, later] time of year is to check for aborted pins. they will often be very blue. Our 'luteofolius' down here blues more.

Are you sure that's an Agaricus and not a Matsutake?

Hesler's concept of G. luteofolius is more than likely irrelevant. He was looking at aeruginosus and comparing it to Singer's concept of Peck's concept of luteofolius which probably doesn't occur west of the Rockies.

Very cool find OBS! I hope you will consider sending some of the dried material toBloodworm or Myself.

Tricholoma magnivelare perhaps? It would be my first gym find along with my first matsutake find. That would be pretty sweet ive been looking for both for a long time.

Probably, but I would argue [after finally being able to read it] that Peck's concept of luteofolius is still less relavant [I'm having a very hard time beleiving that it describes a real mushroom].

Do you have access to Singer's work?

I'm coming around to accept that what we have in Northern California passing as luteofoluis is quite likely not, but is still distinct from the aeruginosus which we also have, and with which I am also familiar.

Pecks description would be the most relevant considering it is the description from which the epithet is derived. The typos are disconcerting. Singer published his description of luteofolius in a journal called Lilloa and I am having a very hard time getting access to a digital copy of volume 22 in which it is printed. The current editor has not replied to my emails.

The first mushroom might be a Pholiota close to section Carbonicola. It might be a Gymnopilus too. The minutely fibrillose, fulvescent stipe and general coloration are making it hard for me to feel any conviction. I'd love to see a well lit picture of the spore print on white paper after it has dried. I would still want specimens if it is a Pholiota.

Ok i was doing the spore prints on foil but i will switch over to white paper right away, and in a few hours i will get you the picture of that spore print.

well; it could be considered that many acedemics in his day had a disconcerting amount of liquor, cocaine and laudanum in their evening diets :P

Pholiota seems plausible enough, but I am still very happy to consider Gymnopilus for now.

Can anybody confirm if #2 is matsutake? I kind of want to try them but im not sure. The smell is hard to describe but kind of spicy like radishes but also kind of bad. Im bad at describing smells but i dont think they smell like cinnamon.

Looks like the original G. luteofolius (peck). You should consider sending some also to me, or directly send it to Laura Guzman in mexico :pm: me pls =)
