Well you're not old and in severe pain and dying of cancer. You friends are gone and your dog died. You're about out of money and you can't sleep cause you got to pee every hour and you can't remember where you keep the toilet paper.  Anything can deteriorate with age dear.

Otherwise we be seeing nothing but happy, sweet old folk in these factory farms we call retirement homes.

Selfishness seems to ripen with age.
..Or at least the filter of doing things to help others deteriorates.
Generally speaking.

kindness and compassion sound like pretty good choices too

I agree, and that includes compassion for my own predicament. In the meantime, I'm into cleaning house. I already jettisoned any contact with my biological brother, an obnoxious, demeaning lawyer. The ne'er-do-well cousins who only called to cry about money problems, which I have responded to with money in the past, can go cry elsewhere now that I'm retired. The couple who, on the surface of things seemed to be our friends, but eventually, I realized, were using us to create their illusion of a circle of friends, but it took like 20 years to realize it. I mean, neither of them ever even asked a question like the one I'm responding to here. There was no real communication going on, nada.

And here, I get trolled all too often. I'm gonna be more liberal with relegating more people to my Ignore List. Unhappiness is contagious, and too many people apparently revel in their own unhappiness and want to communicate it to others like a vindictive whore with AIDS. The only compassionate thing I can do for myself under such circumstances is make a lot of space between me and them, and not masochistically subject myself to even more obnoxiousness in life.

I'll try not to soil myself also.

I worry about myself probably more than is perfectly sane. I tripped on some MXE a week ago and had this image of myself completely falling apart, going about my tasks like a walking corpse. The weird thing is I kind of felt at peace with it, as if my intent to live well was good enough, and that by being skillful at staying true to my intent, it wouldn't really matter if I fell apart. So cultivating a strong intent to care about the world, or your actions in it, I guess is just another way of saying compassion.

I had to look up MXE because I am far-removed from the loop of experimentation at this point (although I am curious). Tell me if you find Wiki's info differing from your experiences with MXE. Particularly toxic psychoactives often have corollary psychological negatives attached, and doubtless, psychospiritual correlates. If you take a notably toxic substance, your 'insights' may be grossly distorted. Belladonna alkaloids, for example, are called "nightmare alkaloids' because people alway seem to have horribly bad experiences, in addition to the fact that overdoses can be so toxic as to be fatal. MXE is an analogue of Ketamine, which, according to the Wiki article can cause bladder problems, but what is not in the article is the phenomenon of neuronal overheating, that I've read elsewhere. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MXE

The point is, conclusions based on the experiences of certain substances should be more carefully evaluated for integration into one's personal values. I am reminded of Ram Dass' experience with the military hallucinogen JB 318 (one of a whole series of JB agents) that he described in BE HERE NOW. Falling apart, however I take it, is not an acceptable outcome. Sitting in a hospital in a state of catatonia, or going about in a state of depersonalization that you describe as "a walking corpse" are likewise not acceptable outcomes, even if one feels "at peace." All peacefulness is not of the same value. There has to be clarity, communicativeness, and compassion-in-action for the benefit of others present.

Acceptance is the only one I give a damn about. There are others things I try to do but that'll all be a wash in the end.

Self-delusion and the ability to completely ignore opposing points of view, that seems to grow with age as well

I see how the "walking corpse" image can sound like it was a state of depersonalization, but it wasn't. To put it simply, I just felt really confident that I could deal with adversity and that the maintenance of my own well-being wasn't the most important thing in the world.

I'm sure there are some potential dangers, but I take low doses very sparingly. Maybe about 20 mg once a month on average. The bladder problems I have read of occurring in ketamine users tends to be in the extremely heavy users, who easily take 100X more, in proportion to the active dose, than what I take of MXE. I think I probably irritate my bladder more with caffeine and occasionally alcohol. I could be wrong, and that would suck, but I feel pretty confident that I am not doing much harm.

I know that dissociatives are not good for your brain in huge doses, but in light doses you have probably heard that, ketamine for example, increases BDNF which helps repair damage from depression?

Well, thanks for the clarification. I have not taken Special K, but when I had to put my dog Ben down, and he was obviously in pain, I requested that he receive Ketamine first. He took a sigh of relief, his hunched up dachshund body relaxed, I gave him a kiss and left the room for the barbiturate injection. I didn't want the vet to be distracted by me. But the point is, the dissociative high that I wanted my friend to die in. You on the other hand should simply be careful.
