Let us bow our heads and pray the wind and rain away.
Quote:
The dense clouds and heavy rains made the day seem almost as dark as night, he said.
"When you're faced with such a scenario, you can only pray, and pray and pray," said mayor Mercado in a telephone interview, adding that mayors in the province had not called in to report any major damage.
"I hope that means they were spared and not the other way around," he said. "My worst fear is there will be massive loss of lives and property." -- USA Today
This guy doesn't seem to have much confidence in his prayers.

you all are so afraid of what you can't know that you've let it turn you emotionless.
as a defense mechanism you actually get angry with people you don't know just because you believe they are all fools. you spend more energy concerned with others' accused foolishness and replace your fear with anger.
i just shake my head at the whole of it. who cares what other people are involved in?
you're con-artists yet you're only fooling yourself.
i have respect for you internet personalities, you're intelligent, but you mask your capacity for remorse or for empathy with angry humor and empty jokes.
is it really hard to see why someone might pray? even if it's for their own comfort, are they any better or worse than you who mocks them for your own comfort?

Talking to one's self for someone else is as unempathetic as one can get. It was/is the largest storm on record and one billion mutterings did nothing to diminish it.

Its pretty delusional to pray and think you are helping others. ..And to publicly boast about your praying as if its something to be proud of or acknowledged is just narcissistic IMO.

could we equate praying to visualizing success?
visualize and attack.
athletes believe they are going to win, when they truly don't know whether winning is what will become of the game.
is this also delusional?

but the point is that you don't KNOW that they're prayers aren't heard, that there is no "godhead", that they are the fools.
i agree, with good reason one might arrive at the conclusion that praying to something unproven is a fool's errand. but what is the harm in it, even if they are wrong?

I am a successful (34 trophies) amateur athlete. I visualize my shots all the time before I make them. This trains and prepares my mind and muscles.
Comparing that to attempting to steer a one thousand mile storm 8,000 miles away by whispering to an imaginary sky genie is just plain retarded.

listen, i get it, but i can't say with honesty that i KNOW either way. i know this isn't an argument with any merit, but it is my honest opinion. in my opinion no one has proved or disproved the notion of a "higher" being.
for me the power of visualization is equated to prayer. also an athlete that is what i've understood it to be, that's what it is to ME.
i don't know what it meant to those people.

We cover this basic tenet here endlessly. A negative cannot be proven; however every test for the efficacy of prayer has failed miserably.
With zero credible evidence for God or prayer, it certainly is ignorant to accept either one of those as factual or even likely.

if one was to experience something significant from prayer, or experience what they might perceive as "god", would that experience alone be enough to remain interested in the concept, possibility?
how reliable is experience?
this goes along with ufo sightings, cryptids, all things 'crazy'.
and listen, i know this is no excuse for ignorance, but i am young and honestly curious.
i don't have any proof to offer, and i know asking for proof of the negative gets us nowhere.

It is rare that skeptics challenge the experience itself; rather the conclusion.
Experience: I saw a light in the sky! Conclusion: Therefore it was an alien scout ship.
Experience: I felt warm and connected to the cosmos. Conclusion: Therefore an all powerful Being beyond space and time exists and created the universe.
And so on...
In the meantime you have provided no backing for your contention that myself or other posters here lack empathy as you charged. An intellectually honest debater would either recant or make a solid case.

Its different. The athlete that visualizes/prays before a contest then has control over his/her performance..I understand the benefits in that scenario.
In the form of a typhoon killing thousands and destroying the land, thousands of Christians can band together with prayer and not a damn thing will get done unless they then hop in a big bus and go to the affected area and offer their help in the form of action.

A shit load of people are dead, let's take a moment to mock religion? What the fuck.

And you’re all that… only you’re pretending you’re not.” -Alan Watts I think that in human evolution it has never been as necessary to have this substance LSD. It is just a tool to turn us into what we are supposed to be.” ― Albert Hofmann

Complaining about prayer is about as effective as prayer

alright, i concede, my comments were emotional and reactionary. it certainly was no debate, just a show of immaturity, and for that i regret making the post.
i respect the opinions here, and call me soft, but i thought it was a little sinister to rub salt in the wounds of the families of those 10,000 dead...although the opinions stated would never reach the consciousness of said families.
i just feel bad i guess

I was almost dead center (~12 miles) of the 1989 CA Bay Area earthquake. I did lots of volunteer work clearing roads and debris and such. There is little I can do for the Philipinos from here.

haha yes, tomorrow i go home to meet my maker.
been clean for two weeks, and should only be in jail for less than a year, which ultimately should be a wonderful opportunity to STAY clean.
plus the jail isn't a very dangerous one, i should be ok.
and do you think this hurricane is going to result in a cheap housing market over there?
