I'm wondering the same myself. I can't figure out if there's a way to buy it using a gift card or moneypak. I don't want to link it to my identity and I don't want to pay with cash...

Coinbase is good.
You could also just look for people in your area selling them for cash. check localbitcoins to find some.
You can use a credit card for some sellers, but very few will actually take them.

There's a lot of options, but those are the most popular (and most reliable).

cashintocoins.com

Go to that website, then follow the 'how to' steps (it's easy). Then go to a Wells Fargo bank and deposit the amount you said you would deposit. Write certain info on the deposit receipt and then send a picture to the email provided.

His name is Will. I slightly screwed the process up (didn't write the transaction ID on the receipt), he emailed me asking me for it and then finished the deal. Took around 5 hours in total from time I deposited the money till the time I got them. I'd buy from him again. There are fees of course, but it was easy so idc.

I know right?  I'm kicking myself for not buying every profitable stock ever when they were almost worthless.  I could be a billionaire right now!  What was I thinking?

This isn't too related to this thread.  but what are the odds the government sells all of Ross Ulbricht's bitcoins?

I assume the price of bitcoins would plummet.  Is it legally probable they'll do this?

they apparently seized them.  Atleast some.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/andygreenberg/2013/10/25/fbi-says-its-seized-20-million-in-bitcoins-from-ross-ulbricht-alleged-owner-of-silk-road/

and the link within that article actually answered my question.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/kashmirhill/2013/10/04/fbi-silk-road-bitcoin-seizure/

so the price may go down once the trial is over and they liquidate the coins.  I don't know if it'll be any significant amount though.

I'm wondering if there are message boards where people sell -- assuming a person might need to get rid of them because they need emergency cash and is offering a big discount. In other words, keeping a lookout for threads of such nature.

Oh and I'm browsing localbitcoins.com and so far the best prices I'm seeing are for foreign listings. For example, most Bitcoins are currently listed at around 320-330 dollars; I'm looking at an Afghanistan listing where they're listed at 303 dollars. Accepted method of pay is OKPay. Are there any downsides or restrictions to buying from foreign users.

it's starting to crash now, but the problem is it never drops enough to justify me buying in.

after the last big drop about 2 or so months ago, it got down to about 70p/btc ... if i hadve dropped 10 grand like i was planning to then, i would have about 40-50 grand++ before tax right now.

kind of kicking myself.

it's too risky though. like it had multiple mini crashes between the rise from 70-~350, and it rose gradually with the exception of just a few short 10-20$ per day gains. in the last 3-4 days its gone crazy from like 260, up to like 390 max or something!!!!

It is a risky game, but so is stock marketing in general. IMO in the long term, bit coins value will always go up, despite crashes etc... Even if you buy them when they are $125 a piece, in the long term, you will gain profit.

It's all about waiting to sell at the right time.

there was one guy on here who used to mine a shitload of bitcoins with some 9 PC rig, he must be absolutely rolling in cash now. his name was diecommie or something. he was mining shitloads back when btc was only like 5-10-15 per coin.

with the ammount of coins he had i seriously think he would having hundreds of thousands now, no joke

like he was way into bitcoins before even the first initial bubble, let alone the second one. and he mines them free, doesnt have to purchase them at a price and resell!

eitherway he must be absolutely rolling in cash. it wasn't so much about how much he was mining with his rig, but for how long and how early on he was mining, when the bTC were really cheap. talking like more then %2000 increase in value.

remember the example i said, from just 2 months, with 10k initial @70 p/coin, its ridden up to ~350 now, which would mean a gain of like 40k if i sold at the peak.

he would have ridden up the first initial bubble and made a killing, then the second as well.

Ah okay that's very true, but don't forget the difficulty to mine goes up, which makes your hardware more obsolete as time goes on. Yea he's probably rolling in cash now thats for sure.

Litecoin is a joke IMO, it offers nothing up to the table that bitcoin doesn't already offer. Bitcoin has more support for it, and more popularity so it's the go to. LTC is also more easily controlled by people on a smaller scale then bitcoin simply because LTC user base is smaller.

Granted, if you don't have ASIC miners, then a trick I've heard people do is mine LTC, convert to BTC.
