Growing shiitake on sassafras? Your opinions?

I have a bunch of shiitake spawn and no good trees too put it in. All of the good hardwood trees around are too big for me to deal with on my own. there is a massive 50 foot tall sassafras tree that is on my property and is growing fairly straight. I am thinking about using this tree, however, all of the info I have found on using sassafras for shiitake have either said this:
Quote:
Trees to avoid for shiitake cultivation include conifers, fruit trees, elm, hackberry, sassafras, soft maples (red and striped), sourwood, tulip poplar, dogwood, black locust, beech and most of the hickories.
or this:
Quote:
Shiitake mushrooms will also grow on American hophornbeam, ironwood, laurel oak, cherry, sassafras, sycamore, tulip poplar, and hickory.
As you can see, there is conflicting information here. I am no tree expert or shiitake expert and I don't know what to believe. Are there any experienced people out there that can voice their opinion on this?

There's only one way to find out!
My guess would be they would prob grow on it. I would try it, but I can see how you might not want to throw a whole bunch of spawn/plugs into something that might not work...

Exactly. I want to use them soon, as winter is nearing. But at the same time I dont want to risk losing them.

Not at the moment. But it is bordering a fence so it will need to come down at some point.

If the only information you have that makes you think Sassafras will support shiitake is this quote, I would be suspicious. Shiitake famously will not grow on cherry. I have had very disappointing results raising shiiitake on woods not on the univesally approved lists. Oak, maple, and alder are a sure thing. In the PNW, that's about it.

I have successfully fruited shiitake on spring cut sassafras. Yield was unimpressive, 2-3 large shiitake on one 24" x 4" diameter log per fall for 3 years.

Really with shiitake youd have to try it. In Australia we have various species that have never been tested and we have to basically give them a crack and see what works and what dissappoints.

I have been researching this for the past few days and from what I have collected, it will produce but is not worth it.
