2 Vermiculite questions

I've grown before and normally use B&Q's vermiculite but I noticed there is a guy selling large, cheap bags of vermiculite as fireplace insulation.
1) Is vermiculite sold for chimneys safe to use for cultivation?
The link below is similar but I could source it locally from a seller at a much better price. http://www.fluesupplies.com/product_info.php?products_id=733&utm_source=google-simple&utm_medium=product_search&utm_campaign=google-simple&gclid=CPmO5bXF07oCFSbHtAod6XcAuw
2) Having struggled to get clean cakes recently I ground up my verm to a dust for the dry barrier on my cakes resulting in a 100% successful batch even with my homemade spore syringes.
Has anyone else noticed a better success rate having ground up their verm?
My thinking being the finer particles would stop any contaminants settling into the substrate. First trial surprised me, my success rate has been piss poor recently but that one change appears to have worked. Only 1 anecdotal example though.

Cheers, was just being cautious incase there was an additive I might not be aware of but that link has much better info than i've seen so far. Even confirms it's completely inert and non toxic if ingested.
Could save me a bundle in the long run.

Looks great. At first I figured it would not be the same as the verm used in cultivation but if you look you "pour it down the chimney" so it probably is...thanks for the link - B&Q is £5 for 10 litres so this works out at 1/2 the price over 100 litres. Please update if you order and receive this as it looks like a great deal and I might use it...but for now if you look on ebay you can get 100 litres of verm for £19.99 inc. P&P

Actually with P&P it's about £40 which is still 20% less than B&Q. You can get exactly the same product on ebay for £32 inc. P&P
