Sensation
    #19100667 - 11/07/13 01:48 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

So the universe, in short, is like a giant recycling bin full of legos that come in the form of atoms. They're constantly forming bonds and breaking bonds and the degree of variation is almost infinite. So that's all well and good. Whatever, they're just mechanical, non sentient little things.

But what absolutely fascinates me is how the hell sensation gets generated from all this. The atoms interact in such a way that they spawn a being of sentience. It's like these lego blocks align so properly that the non-sentient and mechanic legos form a sentient and human object that can observe itself! But how sensation arises is simply insane to me. I get how nerves work and I've studied them in great detail but to have sight and smell and pain and fear as a result of electrons and protons breaking off and reforming is MIND BLOWING.

Every sensation, every bit of pain and sorrow, every horrible war, every bit of happiness, every emotion that means so much to us is simply mechanical and non sentient atoms interacting with each other. And they're not even aware what they're interactions are generating!

I think that people are much the same way.

Just as each neuron can only communicate with the ones adjacent to it, each person can only talk to the people they know.

but collectively I believe we form something greater... the one consciousness.

yes sensation is cool.  much of the ion flux and protein changes responsible for the signal's transduction is understood but how it all fits together to create consciousness is still far from figured out
