Sick from Sparassis crispa

We found a big one here in the Lazo sand dunes near Comox on Vancouver Island. Did the responsible investigation in our several books and the great Matchmaker program. It was obviously a Sparassis crispa. Took only the best of it and my wife and I each ate about a 1/2 cup fried with the usual butter and soy. Tho they are supposed to be excellent, I found it bland and of course the texture was like cartilage. We did have a glass of wine. 8 hrs later I was retching every 15 min for several hours. No other symptoms. The next day i was tired but fine. Odd thing is she was only mildly ill. This is the first time in 35 years of hunting that I've been ill from shrooms. Anyone else reacted badly to normally well regarded mushrooms?

Uh, sparassis crispa is a woodland mushroom that grows at the base of trees. I'm not sure what it would be doing in the dunes unless if found a random tree out there? What were the exact conditions you found it in and did you take a picture?

Interesting that your wife did not take ill.
Guess that just goes to show what we are always told about different fungi reacting differently with different people.

Yeah, sorry, I guess I threw you off with the "dunes" note. This was at the base of a rotten, moss covered stump/log deep in the salal. There is a fairly old forest of mixed conifer, pine and alder and its soil buildup over the dunes here.

You don't happen to have pics, do you? Honestly, if both of you were clearly sick at least a little bit my best guess is misidentifiction... Or maybe something in the environment that they picked up? Anything else you both ate that could of led to this?

Bland flavor and cartiliginous texture does not speak well for the identification. The cooked texture should be not unlike perfectly cooked, somewhat firm udon, and undercooked, it should have a more of a crisp break.
They are said to cause upset when overmature, though I have not heard of such a severe reaction.
Was it turned/turning all brown and sick looking from the tips when you collected it?

Sparassis isn't listed in the 'Thirty-Plus Years of Mushroom Poisoning' pdf. And as a side note, if I understand it correctly Sparassis radicata is a better name for the western S. crispa...

No pix now because I trashed it but yes, I do think it was getting older as I had to cull about 25% of it due to browning at the tips. The parts we ate were carefully selected and white but that may not mean they were not contaminated by age. Literally everything on the Matchmaker was perfect including the pix, tho I did not do a spore inspection with my microscope due to lack of them.

Thanks for the links. It does say the two species are the same, just different locations, so that should be fine. I agree, the clue here was it didn't taste "great" like they said. I thought the texture was due to not preparing it properly (parboiling followed by baking or stewing,)

Have been eating cauliflower mushrooms for years... Love it They are more of a parasitic fungi, I find them normally on living trees or new stumps... Enjoy the flavor and texture!
Some people have allergic reactions to mushrooms But could also couod have been unrelated to the mushrooms
