My first big attempt to grow Oyster mushrooms Aloha Method. 1

Second chamber of my Mushroom House I filed with with 112 buckets 5kg, 66 buckets 10kg and 12 bags 3kg. I'm exhausted, tomorrow I'm going to clean up a bit and sprinkled the room with lime water. I made about 1 ton of material. How much percentage I should expect to collect mushrooms? I fill buckets with straw Aloha Lime method.

Curious, how is air in the room refreshed? What is the outdoor humidity? I don't see any vents/fans in that picture.

Nice work!
Its a pain in the ass isn't it! lol!
Just wait till you get to dump all that out and clean those buckets... Again...

As far how many mushrooms you will get, I can't speculate, but it's going to be a LOT!

im getting about 7% yield per flush (5lbs per 70lb log), so I would guess 140lbs first flush, and two more after that of about equal size

Nice snakebite. What type of oyster you growing?
Also its easier if you use dry weight to estimate your yields. Take the total dry weight of the straw and you should be able to get %50-100 of that weight in fresh mushrooms if you go for 3+ flushes. Best of luck

Gotta disagree there. All the commercial farmers I know including me work purely on wet yield. I know what a log weighs so i know how many mushrooms I am looking at. Dont care how much dry material is in there.
Greys should give you 22-26% total yield in 2 possibly 3 flushes. Ideally 2 so you can get em out and get fresh in. So if its a metric Ton you will get 200-260kg of mush in total.
If you are looking to sell you would be better putting in 1/4 a week then with your flushes 2 weeks apart you get a continuous (ish) flow.

To each their own; but BE% is always calculated using dry substrate to wet mushrooms. This way if someone used %50 moisture content and another uses %75 moisture content, you can still get reliable estimates that are stable across the board. How much mass of substrate(dry) is related to yield, not how much water is in the substrate(wet weight), which always varies from grower to grower.

Another note: what size are your holes? I experimented as well as read and questioned others to find that smaller holes make it much easier to break off clusters. I settled on 3/8" and it is perfect! Hell maybe even more 1/4" holes would make for a larger qty of slightly smaller bouquets but either way the larger holes dont seem to snap off so easy as they are rooted by more surface area to the substrate. Also I'm sure they retain more moisture with smaller holes so you don't have to worry about rehydrating in the future. Oh and I asked for pics on anotehr thread, dont worry about that one! lol I've been away and always jump to the threads i'm already posting on before hitting the new ones :P Keep it up! The holes are 15mm, bigger than your suggestion, but I think there will be no problem. In the room I installed system moistening the air. I'm not sure about the bouquets, maybe the big holes will be a problem.

I haven't tried the lime method yet but when I was growing oysters I could get 75 % dry weight using hot water pastrization . like aleon said 50 to 100 depends on lots of factors. I'm thinking if those buckles r packed good 3 pounds atleast per bucket . Atleast 2 flushes.. And dunking between flushes will improve yield. Looks good

Dunking buckets is difficult even for a few, and with that kind of volume it's pretty unrealistic. I've gotten 2nd and 3rd flushes just leaving them outside, no dunk or anything. Spray with water, that's about the best you can do.

I agree it isn't easy but it will improve yield. There is no problem getting mutiple flushes without dunking.. It's the yield that won't be the same.. I have often thought of trying to colonize a bag or bucket with like a 2 in pipe in the middle of substrate.. After its fully colonized pull out the pipe and fill void with water so the mycelium can obsorb.

Yeah I definitely do try to dunk when possible, it certainly helps. That's funny I've had that same idea about the pipe! Haven't tried it though. I think it might work well in a 5 gallon bucket.

I dunno if I believe that dunking increases yield. In a straw log with 50+lbs of water I don't think h2o is a limiting factor. Maybe with buckets it is. Anyone got data to back up these antecdotes? I do notice that clusters of comparable size off sawdust blocks and straw logs, the ones off sawdust are lighter and drier.

That's a good ? Just for shit s and giggles u might lay another 4 ft floro between the back row of buckets and look for yield difference.. It couldn't hurt and it should let u know weather more light is beneficial.

Good point about the handles. They become somewhat useless after fruits grow since you can't raise them without knocking clusters off anyway.

Yep, a pocket knife and 20 minutes will take care of those pesky handles for sure! They don't weigh enough to really need the handles anyhow.

I personally kind of like the handles, makes carrying the buckets to dump them much easier. just don't put a hole right by the handle on one side. I can carry 3 per hand if they still have handles. But I can see how if you weren't carrying them far it wouldn't matter.

This is a really interesting thread, this is a huge project to do for the first time out. It looks like a lot of preparation was put into it though so I'm sure he'll do well.
Can't wait to see the flush on these guys. It seems with buckets you won't need to order any industrial plastic sleeves, I guess you could save money doing it that way. Cool project!

I carry 4, 2 in one hand. I will think of something not to take off the handles.

depends...I value my labor at $20/hr so it's 'greener' to not buy plastic every month and a half, but it's a major time saver over buckets.

hey I tried that aloha link and can't find a TEK on there... I have an LC of blue oysters arriving tomorrow. I have not grown oysters before with success, but was hoping I could have at least some to bring to my family for the holiday. I have a prepped WBS jar dry and waiting, and two large bags of straw, and 2 questions...
1. is it feasible to get at least a couple pounds within 20 days from an LC? 2. If yes, what TEK do u suggest? and can u link it...again....sry. and one more.. 3. Are your the holes in ur buckets closed during the spawn run?

Trust me Forrester, I can not attain to sell to all they want to buy. My wife to neighbors sold about 30kg. I sold at supermarkets and meat shops in 20 packages of 500 g and they sell them for 2 days working days. The price of 1 kg is 3.5 euros without stems packaged, and non-packaged from the crate at 2.5 euros. so far so good..

I have a 4 angle barrel off 1000 liters which collects around 60-80 kg of straw around 600-700 liters of water(No washing, no shampoo). Add approximately 7kg dehydrated lime or, wet hydrated lime 12kg. Straw, water and lime I leave 24 hours to soak. Then I leave the moistened straw to drain for about 10 hours. I spent about 24 straw bales each weighing about 15-20kg. I filled 112 buckets with a capacity of 5kg (real full 3-4kg) 66 buckets of 10 kg (real full of 7-8kg) and 12 bags of 3kg. Spending 40kg mycelium. First flash 3x8kg and 2x25kg and i expect about 2x25kg more in next 5-6 days...

Inspiring stuff. I am using only steam as many folks are. I am very tempted to try this.
My only issue is that I don't like too use to much water. I spray my straw with a mist of water as it is loaded into my barrels then I let that sit for 24 hours before I put it in the pasteurizer. It works for me but I like the fact that you use no heat.
Really really cool stuff.
Cheers

I really want to. But, how do you dispose of your water? I grow a lot of mushrooms. I go through about 3 50 gallon barrels full of straw a week.

Wait a minute... 3.5 euros / kilo? = $4.79 / 2.2lb = $2.17/lb?!?
I'd buy the shit out of them too at that price!
Or did I do some math wrong?

hehe... Why? I think it's a good price for Macedonian standards. I take my salary in the company that I work around 450 euros. Average salary in Macedonia is 325 euros. The standard is such that the price of Oyster is 3.5 euros per extra class Oyster mushroom. What can we do, life is different here.

Seems crazy, they're like $10-12/lb here. But you're right, it's all relative

Мите,,, ако си пресметал внимателно,, набрал си само 8% И тие 2х25 килограма ќе му дојдат некои 13%. А од сува слама си добил дупло мокра слама,,,нешто грешеш?!
SNakebite: if you make a good calculation, your first flush is only 8%. If you add next 2x25kilos it would be some 13%. And, from dry weight straw you get double wet. SOmething is wrong? VANE...
