Hi, swim is new here, and wanted to say hi. Swim has been experimenting for the last month on a new venture of growing some different psylocibins. I will post the special type questions in the proper forum...
However swim feels that this is the forum for the edible cooking type so they have a few questions.
Swim has very poor internet connections, so searching for 3 minutes to a normal person takes swim a week cuz their internet is very seldom online due to high levels of construction and utilities work in their area. so if it was a stupid or simple question, please understand they have not the recources to search as well as they would like... so racing the internet cable guy to post a question before the connection gets cut for another half hour.... swim has about 4 minutes till this happens.... so here we go
Swim wants as much info on growing poppino(sp?) or aka Italian poplar mushrooms.
Swim would like to know things like what procedures need to be taken to grow them preferably indoor... winters get bad in their neck of the woods... so outside probably wont work... Swim like to cook, they have very good talent for the cullinary arts, and would like to have as many as possible in a small area..
What kind of substrates and contions are needed? any special tricks or could the grow like their cubes do? Swim would love to have a display in the kitchen on the island... about a 3 foot log, grooved out to place the substrate to get them started, and have this log on display and growing constantly to produce fresh mushies in the kitchen and to look cool as a home decor peice...
How would swim do this successfully? They have a thing of about 100 spore seeds from amazon, its (they guess) a little ball of something about the size of a bb, coated in spores that is crusted onto it.
What are the time frames in which these grow? like what stages take what amount of time? swim may even try a stump with a bowl like cavity hollowed out to place collonized substrate into to start the grow, and allow it to start to colonize the stump ... or a lo standing up with holes drilled to place several bunches into many holes along the height of the log and stand it on a table to display as well as eat. but they like the idea of a log about 3 foot long, with one side flattened to make it not roll, then a channel cut down the length on top side to allow them to grow upwards kinda like a window type flower planter,,,, or whould they be better off another way, like a flower planter for real to place substrate in.
swim has a few species of magic mushies( cmabodian, b+, and golden techer) they have never even considered growing these until last month, since then, they are doing very well and is about to complete the first harvenst in a week(ish)
4 jars were started, one was contaminated, and one was colonized, and is now fruiting in a chamber. the others were just colonized with cambodians and gt"s. pf tek style.... theres one larger bag of brf with gt's and am going to inoculate the one grain bag today.
anyway any info and ideas, even pics of pretty looking grow displays would be greatly appriciated.... also they are thinking of trying to grow portobellas, white button caps, and( if they are recomended and tasty) morels.
are morels any good? or oysters? swim would hate to waste time money and space to grow oyster and morel if they arent to his liking. they like to eat portabellas, and white regular type mushies, and am open to trying new things, but afraid they wont enjoy them... sorry such a long rambling post, but swim has may many things to learn and 5 minutes an hour to actually post or search. hopefully so their internet will not be so skiddish and will be normal like everyone elses... thanks yall PS SWIM REALLY LOVES THIS SITE, WHAT IT ALLOWS FO ONE TO POST AND LEARN< AND THAT SWIM LOVE EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTS IT!!!!! I FEEL BLESSED TO HAVE SUCH A RESCOURCE AT THEIR DISPOSAL

ok, swim thought someone would have at least given a good starter recipie for a substrate.
At least can anyone point him in the direction of a how to on poplar mushroom cultivation?
how do he inoculate with spore covered seeds//? what sub to use? did he need a pc or to be real sterile? or since they grow wild, can they just be grown in natural like conditions?
would drilling holes in a hardwood log thats fresh, and packing with spore seed and sawdust or straw work?

I think we all appreciate talking about ourselves normal, not like a paranoid swimmer.
if you want to grow mushroom dont buy spore covered seeds. Check the vendors for liquid cultures. Inoculate sterilized grains, Inoculate sawdust and then inoculate a bulk substrate like logs with holes drilled in them.
with your next minutes of internet download this mushroom growers handbook
If you really are interested purchase growing gourmet and medicinal mushrooms by paul stamets

Oysters can be grown without much prior knowledge. They require lots of fresh air however, so your idea to create a display would work better with a more CO2 tolerant species. If you go to Paul Stamets site you can order an Enokitake substrate block, that will allow you to fruit relatively soon, and would work within a high CO2 environment, given the temperatures stay low. However, without knowledge of how to work in a SAB and do agar work, you're pretty limited to whatever you can order online. That being said, there are techniques that work for what you want to accomplish and can do so now. PF tek works, so you might want to stick with that until you can learn more difficult techniques, being SAB and agar work. Once you know how to work in still air conditions and maintain some sterility (via plates), then your ability to produce mushrooms might be more viable.
Your best bet is as said above. If you can't learn online and through the forums, go find some books. And if you can, go out into nature and look for mushrooms. Two easy things anyone can do to help understand fungus better.

Sorry to sound paranoid, but he is growing more than gormet mushrooms, and doing very well at that,
He wishes to get started soon, and has been reading everything he can conjure up on limited connetions to the web...just seems like theres not much info on growing these specific mushrooms versus the thousands of shitake and oyster how to's
would ordering plugs be more viable than these seeds? He will be ordereing more stuff soon like premade grain bags, a PC and cultures.... just waiting on paychecks

He is you and we all know that, talking like that only annoys people and doesn't fool anyone, especially the police.

This works great for substrate. I add a bit of gypsum before adding water.
Lipa's tek
I case with a 50/50+ after I see the first pin.
As a side note, I don't think I have ever seen a success story with "spore covered grain" If anything grows at all it usually isn't the mushroom advertised.
