Rap isn't neccisarilly garbage,it could be a big beacon of hope for artful music as a whole, but unfurtunantly, thats not how it worked..

Rap started as a way to use your voice to make a song, instead of using instruments(too expensive "in da hood") just imagine the potential of that concept, that could have abandoned traditional music up until that point completly, imagine,no chorus,no instruments,a slim pallette with infinte possibilites, but as we all know it didn't work..

I'd like to see a revival of the old rap, anything besides this jay-z shit..

I think now-rap has more weird sounds, more
weird barely-music elements than any lame
80s or Golden Age or anything else rap. Maybe
not Jay-Z, but there's some seriously crazy
stuff that you might not have heard before.

Listen to, like:

'This Beat is Hot.' From the Roscoe P. Coldchain
mixtape and, I think, on the Neptunes album and
on a bunch of different things with different
titles. It's the most scrapey, un-music song,
just the same Q-Tip-in-your-ear ffffff fffffff
backwardsy horribleness.

And the Busta Rhymes song from the same album,
'Light Your Ass on Fire.' The same non-music,
noise noise noise idea.

Or Kardinal Offishall's 'Belly Dancer'!

And, beyond weird sounds, because there are a
million weird sounds ones, look at all of the
new sounds that hip-hop has incorporated. While
rock music has been stuck in perpetual worship
of the same blues riff and the same European
gayness for the last sixty thousand years.

Jay-Z jumping on the remix of a four year old
bhangra song! 'Beware of the Boys'! Telling them
to leave Iraq alone, too.

'B R Right'! Trina talking about her vagina
over klezmery violin stuff!

Listen to 'Oochie Wally' and 'Get Ur Freak On'
and 'Thoinga Thoing.'

Outkast doing indie-pop on 'Hey Ya'! Just Blaze's
sped-up soul samples! The total bizarreness of
hearing Lil Jon for the first time! Even hearing
'Country Grammar' for the first time. Like, hearing
'Ante Up' for the first time! 'Grindin''! Have you
heard that? Have you heard the stuff from the
David Banner album? 'Cadillac on 22s,' 'Bush,'
for the Mississippi-guitars-and-cheap-drums
thing and you've never heard it before, and
even 'Bring It On' sounds like the end of the
world.

You have to listen and if you're really, really
interested you'll find stuff. Like, a throwaway
track on some Swishahouse guy's mixtape can
sound, like, so fucking bizarre and it seriously
does things you've never heard before. (Actually,
it's the freestyle right after the shout outs on
The Final Chapter 2K3.)

If you don't think hip-hop today has more crazy
experimentation and weirdness and magical music
things and excitement than ever before, you're
totally not listening. I mean, compare Big Daddy
Kane and, like, whoever, Kool Moe Dee and then
compare Lil Jon and, like, Freeway! Fuck. It's
crazy. There is so much crazy stuff.

And it's not like it's going to last forever!
Like, rock people always say, 'Oh, this will
last forever and European melodies and Negro
blues rhythms are the highest achievement in
music ever.' It's going to be discarded eventually
and that's part of why it's exciting.

It's really amazing to me that a song can
sound like it was made by aliens and still
have so much emotion and stuff and people can
dance to it.

That's part of the good thing. A song like
'Grindin'' can be this crazy as fuck headfuck
garbage-can-lids-clanging thing and it can
still be relating this contemporary and
really-lived experience and people can still
dance to it and when you listen to it you can
feel like you're part of a Western world
happiness and you are feeling happy along with
some other people and you might even be hearing
it in a public place and dancing with other
people or just watching them dance and there
are beautiful girls and strong boys and that's
why it's wonderful. It's alien and it's still
real and it is making people happy and when I
listen I am part of that and also feel happy.

That's why I like mainstream rap (funny noises and
the everyone-enjoying-it-with-me thing and all that
and the same basic reasons that I tend to like all
music) but I like lots of the other kind, too. I am
listening to Comin' Out Hard right now.

i think if i were a black man... i'd probably be like "FUCK THIS SHIT!"...

i swear... mainstream rap is one of the biggest things keeping so many stereotypes alive in white america (and black youth) about the black man. when i watch BET, i get pissed off about how it makes black people look, and i'm not even black. damn...

trust me there are black people out there that think and say that!! alotta rap pop culture does nuthin but dig holes for more self-respectful black folks (and artist).

the reason it digs holes for artist is that this bulljive actually sells! so if another more insightful skilled rapper approaches mtv or bet, they would be shot down

half the stuff on mtv and bet issnt that bad musically and beat wise, its when you hear a terrible emcee say sumthing that shouldnt be. i think this ruins what the song had going for it.

it ruins not only the song but the emcees credibility.if your suppose to be this dope ass rapper you should be able to compose sumthing that represents you without offending or slandering.

for instance take a listen to ...

deltron -deltron 3030
mr lif- enter the colossus (personal fav)
people under the stairs- Question In The Form Of An Ans
zion i-deep water slang
talib qweli-reflection eternal
juice-listen to the words
the grouch-fuck the dumb (good name for a album)
dialated peoples-the platform
louis logic-sin o matic
anti pop consortium-arrythmia

all black rapper that dont have to be steady thuggin to sell albums.

the problem is up and coming emcees realize that they can sell their ass to pop culture (aka sellout) by being thug and personifying gangsters.lucrative , so thats how it goes down

and yes, ebonics might sound dumb to you but theres science behind it

btw anyone on the shroomery , if youd like to talk hip-hop (not hip-pop) pm me

Hip-Hop is a culture; rap is a form of music (big difference). Visit http://templeofhiphop.org to learn more about Hip-Hop so that you dont have theses stereotypes.

Stereotypes have nothing to do with rap music... Before their was rap music, there were stereotypes. Ignorance begets stereotypes. If an ignorant person is on the receiving end of the music, then they will be stereotypical. Any intelligent person who lacks ignorance will not judge anyone based on a "stereotype."

Bivalve, all rap music is based on those same 'gay eroupean melodies and tired blues riffs'. In rap they are just really simplified. And those funny little noises that are so groundbreaking.. those are just notes. Notes of the existing scales that have been around for a long time. Rap is not going to change that, though it would be nice.
