ah god... my neighbor is listening to some right now...

i think if i were a black man... i'd probably be like "FUCK THIS SHIT!"...

i swear... mainstream rap is one of the biggest things keeping so many stereotypes alive in white america (and black youth) about the black man. when i watch BET, i get pissed off about how it makes black people look, and i'm not even black. damn...

anyway... when i hear some good, artistic hip hop i try to enjoy it while it's there, because my white ass doesn't know shit about hip hop, and i don't have any records of it. anyone know of any good hip hop out there to be picked up?

Q: How do you feel about your music being called "nerdcore" or "geeksta rap"?

A: Well, it's definitely not gangsta rap or too political, or hyper intelligent like MC Paul Barman. I
like nerd core, it sounds better. I like that geeks like the music, 'cuz they aren't really known for
their musical taste or having any taste in hip hop. And it's a really hungry demographic. They watch my cartoons and get my jokes. And they all make bank so they have dough to spend on t-shirts and the like. I get a lot of fanmails about the new album and how geeks are relieved to finally hear music about their lives. there's a lot to talk about, a lot of fun and a lot of sadness. It's dramatic. As dramatic as any hood. thankfully, nerdcore slayings are down. I plan to do conventions in Atlanta and hopefully go to comicon, so I can finally meet some of the fans. I look forward to that.

Q: Did you intend to cater to the geek/nerd goups?

A: No, we just made music and it turns out I'm a geek. I like Star Wars. I'm not pretending to be black or cool or rich or whatever. I am who I am. I try to keep it real, or at the very least, really stupid.

Q: How do you feel about being said to sound "nasal" in some songs?

A: I am who I am. On my new album I have a song called 10 year old makin' fun of the fact that I have a high voice. I don't care. I've been made fun of my whole life. Take your best shot.

There is some great hip-hop out there, but I agree most of the mainstream stuff is bollocks.

(C)RAP Sucks!!!!! I can't see how anyone can listen to it for more than a little while at a time. It's all pretty much about 'bling bling' (stupid term), pimpin, fucking hos (or bitches), and getting drunk or high.

There's a problem when most criticisms of rap music
are actually a criticism of some weird vision of
'black culture,' whatever that is. It always comes
down to the same racist thing.

I truly dislike most of the lyrics in almost all rap songs but it's the beat that keeps America stuck on rap. A lot of the videos on BET make black people look bad especially the girls. No matter how they look they will still continue to display themselves that way. In their culture it's not "hip" if you don't act this way. Whether a doctor or even a scientist, if their black, they probably still act/dance dirty like that. I'm saying this from experience, I lived in Miami all my life till I recently moved. Whether they were white,black or latin they listened to hip hop or rap. Rap just portrays women as "Hoes","Bitches" and anything low. I don't know why they put up with it but they do, I guess it's the money they generate. The guys degrade the women to keep them under their control by keeping their self esteem lowered. Most people listen to rap for the dance aspects of it I'm sure. One song that proves that rap can be gentle and clean is "Where is the Love" by Black Eyed Peas. Now that's the only type of rap that should be recited. Rap could be a lot of peoples favorite dance music if they all were like that song. Look at our past superbowl halftime shows with Nelly. Although he's alot cleaner than some, he does still degrade women and we put him on our most watched event in America. This proves rap is a staple in America but it definitely needs to be cleaned up quite a bit. I have a lot of black friends that listen to rock, metal and even country, yes evn country(yucky), they really enjoy it and say it is higher quality music than the rap they are use to. Those who listened to rock and metal generally enjoy reggae and soft r&b hip hop over hardcore gangsta stuff. Lyrics so ignorant sounding no matter what type of music will someday come to an end or at least change quite a bit.It has to or America has truly been blanketed by the haze. Hmmm, the future, we'll see. :rolleyes:

It's not like rap music is the last bastion of
misogyny or something. We live in a culture that
loathes women. It's just a lot easier to spot
misogyny in a rap song that it is in a bleach
commercial or on Friends or in Vogue. Most of
your criticisms could be applied just as easily
to the greater Western popular culture that
rap music is a small part of.

I disagree Bivalve. See TV and society as a whole do portray women as objects but usually as sexy or attractive. I know you will see alot of negativity towards women on TV but usually that's because the woman being portrayed in a negative way probably was just that. For example, a street hooker being called a whore on TV would be fine because thats what she is. When a woman dancing in a video is called such a word it's just because she's a woman.Nothing else is considered but her gender when they label her this way. She's not a whore or bitch just a woman shaking her bootie a bit. There is a clear difference in the way woman in general society are portrayed as bitches and hoes and how all woman in the ghetto are called the same no matter if she's the preacher's wife or an 87 year old grandma. Hope you know the difference cause I've seen it far too often in these communities and the woman do nothing. Oh well can't fight a war with no backup I guess. If they continue to except these ways as normal and figure thats just how it is, it will remain that way.

Another thing I'd like to add: In rap culture calling a woman a bitch or hoe is just another way for them to say girl,woman. It is an awful adaption in language but this may be why the woman except it as ok. Supposedly they mean it in another way not negatively, if thats possible for those words to have derogatory and neutral meanings in different cultures. Like a rapper would say,"you're my down azz bitch" Ja Rule to Ashanti. She wouldn't think twice about smiling back at him as though he'd told her she was the most beautiful woman alive. So they really do mean that bitch/hoe is just another name for girl. It also allows them to still feel like woman are inferior but without actually making the woman feel degraded. The only big problem with this is that anyone out of the rap culture see these guys calling these woman these things and think damn they are fuckin assholes when really they couldn't feel bad at all for calling them this because bitch/hoe is commonly substituted for woman. It's the people who don't understand this and the kids who are not capable of knowing the double meanings that worries me. Hmmmm they could have picked a better word.

Alot of their words are seen as derogatory but in fact they mean something totally different. For Example "my nigga", would be a black dudes good friend but some would wonder why he says this common derogatory. It's not negative in slang talk. Weird but hey if those words are being used now, have been used a while, no matter how bad they make black people look or sound it probably will never change. Not only black people use these words anyone white,latin,asian,jewish whatever they say my nigga too meaning my dawg(Dog isn't that low too lol)or my friend. Lots of bad sounding words that are now being commonly used as acceptable slang. Bad words turned good. Whats next?  :rolleyes:

I replied to a similar thread about this a week or so ago: How can you say that all rap/hip hop is shit when you're obviously basing that argument on the majority of the mainstream in that genre? Think of most of the shite that gets in the charts from other genres too and the bands that are so much better that will rarely make the charts. It's the same with rap/hip hop and if you don't believe there's talent in it, go and listen to Alphabet Aerobics by Blackalcious and I think you'll realise you're wrong. Other GREAT hip hop artists include:

Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest, The Coup, Ugly Duckling, The Roots, Common, Jurassic 5, Blackalicious, Company Flow, any song featuring MC Abdominal (the DJ Format album is a good place to start), Dead Prez, Buck 65, Anti-pop Consortium, The Nextmen, People Under the Stairs, Del the Funky Homosapien, Mr. Lif, MF Doom, Digable Planets, Atmosphere, Sole, Dangermouse (DM) & Jemini.

If you've heard most of them and STILL think that rap/hip hop is shit and all about 'bling bling' then I'll be very surprised.

I like old-school hip-hop, but most 90% of rap today is negative music that is hallow and empty. What's the art is cursing a zillion times and talkin about killing people? What's the art is talking about how many hos you have or bitches you fucked?

Proven by science: it takes more skill to
talk about how great of a rapper you are
and direct people to throw their hands in
the air than it does to talk about anything
else!

Also: Lady and the Tramp is better than Scarface,
for similar reasons.
