My SG-FC first grow! Update 1: (Pics)!
    #19098823 - 11/07/13 02:28 AM (10 years, 2 months ago)

1. I steam sterilized 2 1/2 pint jars of whole brown rice/vermiculite for 1hr:30Min's.
2. Waited 14 days to mix with 1-1/2 pint hpoo, then let sit for another 4 days.
3. Put the spawn in my sg-fc, which uses a 12/12 light cycle timer.

Any questions comments or concerns? :p
The mycelium is like rubber solid!!
No signs of contams.

Advice welcomed

If there is any heat coming off the lamp that could possibly be an issue. Don't want to fry the mushies! I'm not sure exactly fruiting temps since I'm pretty new myself but try searching for it and make sure you're not too hot!

Temps between 70-78 are great. As long as the light doesnt send you over that range youll be fine.
I would sink that tub into the perlite,to bring the surface closer to the perlite. Your myc looks odd, tho i cant place my finger on it. Could be the.photos tho.

Thanks for responses! Here's a close up of the spawn @giggle
Im also thought it looked odd, its kind of tan, but I mean white myco mixed with brown hpoo = tan mycelium??
Also: No signs of discoloration, (black, green, yellow, orange etc)
Its not 100% colonized about 95%
The lamp is 2 cfl's so they stay pretty cool!

watch the moisture on the  surface of  your sub to tell you when to mist, if you see beads of moisture right across the surface your good, if it's not right across mist away

You should have put this in a bigger shallower container. Your sub looks a little deep.

Even though the top has mycelium growth that does not mean the whole thing is 100%, four days seems really short.

Either way if it does not contam due to being too thick it should fruit something.

Because you may have fruited it early it may take up to 2-3 weeks before you will be harvesting anything.

If your lamp is heating the FC to much just grab some soft white or blue bulbs they wont heat up as much.

Good Luck!

I'm really new at this but if it were me, I'd probably spread it out some, It does look really deep and, in my mind, you would get a bigger yield with half the thickness that you have....... My opinion is worth about a 10 cent cup of coffee at this point, just so you know

IIRC, X amount of colonized substrate will yeild Y amount of fungus, regardless of how its fruited. More or less, extreme circumstances aside. I hope that makes sense.

So this morning I moved the sub to a different tray misted and im going to inoculate for another 4-5 days before putting back in my SGFC, which keeps humidity around 90-95. is this ok?

That sounds good, just make sure it is back to 100% before fruiting it. now would be the time to mist it well if you haven't done so already.

That's a lot of spawn for so little hpoo. I'd use a 1:4 spawn:bulk ratio. Ur sub depth should be between 3-4 in. Use more or bigger trays and use ur space efficiently. Add h2o2 soaked poly fill to those holes if u can't keep humidity up. Add gypsum to bulk sub at 5-10%. Toss in some coffee grounds too. Make sure it's 100% colonized before fruiting to avoid contams

This is totally bad advice.

Plugging the holes of a SGFC with anything is going to lower the humidity, not raise it.

And soaking polyfill in peroxide severs no purpose....fruiting is not a sterile process.

Light isn't a major pinning trigger. however, most growers tape up the sides of clear containers to prevent side pinning

No, most growers use plastic liners inside the tub to prevent side pinning.

Those who tape the sides to block light only think it stops side pinning.

Side pinning is caused by FAE hitting the sides of the substrate, between the substrate and the tub walls.

When a plastic liner is used, it will stick to the sides of the substrate as it consolidates and shrinks, eliminating this microclimate that side pins love.

Light will help the substrate pin anywhere else on the substrate conditions permit...this is not necessarily where the light actually hits the substrate.

Some people use clear liners in their clear tubs and get no side pinning.

So the poly fill should just be cleaned with hot water and soap? Ok. I just figured since peroxide was how people cleaned their perlite.... Obvi different materials require different methods

Why would adding polyfill to the holes reduce humidity? I don't see a humidifier, shouldn't poly create a barrier that will retain the moisture in the FC, which should have a higher humidity than the rest of the room? Or will all that poly wick up the moisture or sumthin? I Thot more air exchange meant less humidity. So what is the purpose of poly then, simply to filter large contams?

U say plugging the holes with ANYTHING will lower the humidity?

No one cleans there perlite with peroxide....either boil it, cook it in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes, or use bleach...it should just need to be rinsed when new in the beg.........I would never use peroxide....

Because you would be reducing the amount of fresh air....

Quote:

MycofestDestiny said:

Constant fresh air means there will be constant humidity.

Using polyfill in a SGFC is just a noobish mistake that actually lowers the humidity in a properly built SGFC.

Heat and humidity both rise out of the top holes taking the co2 laden air with it.

This will pull fresh air up thru the perlite wicking moisture into the chamber.

If you plug any of the 1/4" holes )which should be placed 2" apart in a grid pattern on all 6 sides) with polyfill it will effectively hinder the chamber from performing the way it was designed.

http://www.mushroomvideos.com/Terrarium-Tek

Quote:

MycofestDestiny said:

Yes.

Also fruiting is not a sterile process, it is done in open air, so there is never a need to filter the air in a fruiting chamber.

Polyfill in a monotub is used to regulate fresh air exchange while holding in the humidity....nothing to do with filtering anything.

Just because it says full auto on the lower does not make it so....the internals have to be right.....it's a semi ar-15 lower......I also have 40rd magazines (dangerous assault clips)....they are WAY more killy than the standard 30 rounders.....just ask any politician.....they would also think this is by far the scariest and most deadly rifle known to man.....lol.

I'm not sure where I saw someone using peroxide to clean perlite. Maybe it was that crappy 'Mushroom Growing made easy' video. Anyhow, I see ur logic on the sgfc. The air flows up thru the bottom, collecting the water from the perlite, etc. thanks for the help

That being said...

What gives u the right to own a rifle with 40 round clips, semi auto or not? Seems a bit... I don't know....PARANOID/ DELUSIONAL!

No wonder u have 10000 posts and still aren't a tc!

Since you've given me so much advice, here's some for u

B. move into a better neighborhood so u don't need a fuckin arsenal to feel safe

Not even sure how to answer A....

I am trying to move to a better neighborhood, but even if I did, I would still have my guns.

There will always be a criminal element in our society, and you must remember, when seconds count, the police are just minutes away....why call the police anyways?  Oh yea that's right, because they have guns......didn't see that one comin.....

It is my responsibility to protect myself and my family....I will not be calling the police to save us....I will handle it myself (if and when the time ever arrises) like an independent(trained) human being and call them to scrape up the body.

I will not do my family the injustice of having to wait for the police to show up when they feel like it while some crazy person is kicking down my door...that would be tactically moronic.

Thank you for the advice tho....

A. Sell ur mushrooms to people u trust instead of relying on intimidation
B. move into a better neighborhood so u don't need a fuckin arsenal to feel safe

Peace
