Do you (want to) sail? Let's chat.

I thought for a while that my life's passion was going to be mycology. It lasted a year or so, and I really still enjoy mushroom hunting and figuring out what is what.
But my life's really about the sailboat these days. Can't get enough. Race, cruise, just putting around. Fixing, upgrading, shopping for... Love it all.
Anyone else sail or interested in getting into it?
I'll let you decide which one is me:

my friend received a 27ft sail boat (yacht?) for free, and we used it quite a bit up until he got tired of paying the slip fee at the dock every month. It was fun, especially when tacking or jibing...pretty exciting, actually. and when its calm....my god...It's so damn relaxing...
Edit: you the one throwing a shaka-brah?

Fuck me! Nice boat!
I've never sailed anything bigger than an Albacore, but I've been thinking about looking for a boat that could handle some bigger water. I've got my eye on a Contessa 26 that's for sale near me. The idea of being able to cruise long distances without burning a ton of fuel is very appealing to me.
I think you're probably the hang loose dude too. Damn, I'm jealous.

Here's from the race last weekend:
We call it "Sailing with a porpoise" har har
I actually don't own my own boat yet. Wanted to learn to sail a few years back, and there were 3 choices...
1: Take expensive classes (and most people say they're so-so at best. Not a lot of on-the-water time) 2: Buy a boat and figure it out (OK, but you're never quite sure if you're doing it the proper way, plus $$$) 3: Crew. Free (mostly, I bought gear and bring rum sometimes).
So I chose to crew. It's a trial-by-fire method, but you learn fast, and you learn the proper way of doing things. Because if you're only doing them "OK" you don't win races.
It's also taught me a lot about what kind of boat I eventually want to buy. I originally thought I wanted a big heavy blue-water invincible cruiser. Which if I planned on doing round-the-world I would still consider. But sailing in the puget sound needs a boat that will move in light and fluky wind. And I had to be honest with myself - I'm going to be doing 90% of my sailing just around my home-waters, not down in the trade winds and the pacific islands
I'll never be able to afford a real competitive race boat (these guys throw thousands of dollars at new sails/gear every year just to stay fast). So I just want something to take the family out, not be too slow, and do some low-intensity local racing with friends. And when I want to go fast, I crew on someone elses MONEY!
I fixed this guys onboard computer and instruments this summer. Instead of payment I told him I just wanted a couple rides. So next month I get to race on this machine:

Ker 46. Originally built and used as a training boat for the America's Cup over in the UK. (2005 I think)

@Tooty - Cool beans on the 27 footer. Do you remember what kind? Free is the best kind
@Khii - My buddy has an albacore. Sometimes we take it out and get our asses handed to us by the local teen sailing club (they have newer faster boats than us.) But it's still a blast because we can drink beer and they can't. NEENER.

I sailed small laser skiffs when I was younger, it was something my father made me do. Whilst I didn't exactly enjoy it (more a fan of horsepower than wind power!!), it did teach me a lot about weather patterns and how to navigate across water safely. I've been out in some gnarly weather and thanks to my sailing knowledge I was able to make it back safely.

Never sailed before, but think one of these would be fun.
