Invisible Bicycle Helmet INVENTED!!!

This is pretty amazing. Two Swedish female university students invented an "invisible" bicycle helmet that works like an airbag, and explodes prior to impact.
It's brilliant engineering and design, however not realistic to pay $600 for a bicycle helmet that will only work once. They added a great feature though, the black box that records the past 10 seconds prior to a crash.
See how it works upon impact:
Maybe in 10-20 years they will make these relatively cheap, and their designs will expand to other realms.
If in a few years these were available for under $30, would you wear it for bicycle riding or skateboarding or rollerblading?
I personally wouldn't because I would be afraid of mechanical failure, and always wear a traditional helmet when I rollerblade. But if they were statistically proven to be 100% guaranteed, I would definitely wear it, to look less like a nerd when I'm rollerblading lol. Now all they need to come up with are invisible elbow pads and knee pads to go with it.
As a matter of fact, maybe with this design they can invent a completely invisible inflatable air bag that envelops your entire body so when a car hits you you will be spared from the wreckage. Interesting ideas!

thats neat technology but i do not see why you would chose that over a normal helmet...seems to be more stressful than either of the alternatives actually

You rollerblade?
also, this is not very practical, but with some finetuning it might be one day.

I think it's one of those starting inventions that leads to many other brilliant inventions surrounding it. For example, the inflatable epilepsy helmet is a great idea, for people who have severe epilepsy but want to live normally without being perceived as retarded or something by their school peers.
Who knows how this will change airbags in cars, not to mention for pedestrians as well.

Well, if you wear it with a shirt that is the same color, then it will just look like a turtleneck, I think.

QFT, I'd feel less douchey wearing an actual helmet

Yeah technically, but you can still reuse your helemt if it's just a small fall where you don't even hit your head

That's true, but if you head your head at all in a crash that helmet should be going in the garbage. Even if it looks OK there's a high chance that it has lost it's structural integrity and it won't protect you in the event of a crash.

Correct. But what I think he was trying to say is even if you just hit a curb weird and fall down quickly this new helmet would deploy and be useless. I have fallen many a time on my bike, especially my mountain bike on the trails where I feel this new helmet would have deployed for no reason.

For sure. I don't think the intent of this helmet is for mountain biking though, more for casual street riding. The video is marketing it as being a fashion thing.
