Auschwitzy or not, it's a good strategy for getting ahead. Just don't go too far with it or you'll turn into a dork. :borg:

At least the people at Auschwitz worked hard, unlike half of the people I know in my age bracket.
Maybe that's the appropriate motivation for people, after all.

But what if you have no "passion", or if you do have one, then what if it cannot be turned into a career?

What is the conventional wisdom to do in this situation?

If you meditate you can find passion in any job :-)
and any life situation

but you would also know what you really want to do, if you go deep enough into yourself
everything will be clear afterwards

my studies are not exactly something that will assure me a job :-) , but I do them anyway for many years now, because I love doing it
doesn't matter if I have to work at a supermarket/be a taxi driver afterwards to me...

I suppose if you have no aspirations whatsoever, working at a supermarket for many years will be quite adequate.
As for the rest of us, at some point we had to stop bagging groceries to progress. But keep meditating, as I'm sure that will provide you with all of the worldly satisfaction you could ever need.

If you have a passion...weed, mushies, school, fitness.... create your future from it. Cultivate legally and sell, study like no tomorrow. Put effort

Take a journey with your life. Money is just a social construct. Not worth it. Seek happiness by trying new things out til you find your prime

if you can't make doing what you like into a day job, find a day job that is satisfying enough that will allow you to pursue what you like doing on the side. if you are a complete blank slate of a person with no interests, hobbies or passions then skip the former and shoot for the latter.

Rather not say.  My job is nothing special for sure, long hours for little pay, but the industry intrigues me, and there is money to be made without necessarily needing a college degree.  The problem is I'd have to get into management which pains my soul, but maybe I can find a weird niche too.  I don't get high all the time it all, and I certainly have to hide my use, but nobody really monitors what I do with my time which is key.  I don't cause drama and I get results so nobody fucks with me.  That is important to me like I said, not being under someone's thumb all the time.

I have a passion for manual labor and getting shit done, which is rare these days.  I certainly don't drink or do anything that is unsuitable for the workplace like psychedelics.  Plus I'm trying to get clean for a bit, keep it to weed and a few beers after work.  I've been pushing things a bit far, but I still get nothing but praise.  The totally clean people are just as lazy and attitude prone. I say if anything they bring more drama.

i'm a laborer.  but i don't enjoy using heroin before/during work.

i prefer 1-2mg suboxone, though it'd be nice to be clean off all of it.

Here's the thing - how are you supposed to choose your career BEFORE you enter the career to get a good idea of what it's like?

It's kind of hard to tell what a career will be like until you enter it...so it seems like you just kind of have to roll the dice and hope you like what you chose.

i dont think a passion could be turned into a job.  Once your passion is turned into a job then its your job to do your passion and everybody hates work lol

but really. could you see sticking with one job/career for the rest of your life?  That means for the rest of forever (while your alive).  Screw that, I'd rather take the fun ride and jump into random jobs than be stuck with the same boring routine everyday.  I get bored easily and I know for a fact that if i turned my passions into a job, I'd want out just as quickly as the next thing because I've done it before.. and I already quit lol but I still do it from time to time because I still am passionate about it.  It comes back, you just gotta take breaks from certain mindless tasks

I understand what you're saying.

I just hate the notion of basically hating 5 days out of the week, and enduring them hanging by a thread of hope looking forward to the 2 days at the end of the week for the rest of my life.  I used to do that in high school and that sucked.  I still kind of do that now.

I see other people that are turning their "passion" into a career and it seems to be making them happy - so that's why I think it's possible to make your passion your work and still enjoy it.

In addition, all bullshit aside there are some careers out there that would be pretty freaking badass.  Rock star, for instance (of course we can't all be that but you get the point), Photographer for National Geographic magazine, etc etc.  There are definitely some passion-based careers out there that would probably rock.

My advice would to be to find a happy medium. Of course it would be best to find a career that you're passionate about.

However, very often people find that what they want to do as a career isn't really realistic when it comes to making a living. This is where my first sentence comes in. If you can't find something that you're really passionate about that will help you to survive then your best bet is to find something in between.
