What is this thing???????
    #1909805 - 09/12/03 03:57 PM (13 years, 2 months ago)

Hi all,

I was in the pine woods behind my house in northeast CT yesterday and discovered this mushroom growing at the base of a dead pine. I've lived on this property for nearly 14 years and never seen anything like this.

Anyone know what it is? I'm sure I could do some digging in mushroom books, but since I don't have one I thought this would be a great place to start.

Thanks,
BH Davis

well, other tahn a pollypore i can't really say as i've never seen a fungus like that. if you want anything ID'd you had better learn the program. read the stickie threads for this forum, paying close attention to the one titled "please read this before posting an id request". compliance with the rules here is not optional.

the top of that mushroom looks EXACTLY like the reishis i pick here. they are often white along the margin and red near the stem. they get more orange and yellow toward the edges. sometimes they are all red and orange or all red or yellow-white or almost all white, but usually they are mixed all different in age.

if reishi can grow in this form i'll be impressed. i've never seen or heard of it and it seems like it would be completely outside of the morphology for the species.

I tend to believe it's a reishi, albeit, as Mitchnast indicated, a morphologically mutated specimen. I heven't seen this on reishis, but almost the same mutation is quite common on a mushroom I posted here a while ago, poluporus squamosus f. rostkovii, where the addition f. rostkovii indicates the mutation. I think it's about the same story here. Anyone opinions?

With the squamosus, the location and length of the stem, which is usually somewhere close to the middle, but f. rostkovii appears to have a stem much more to the side, like reishii.
