Cigarette addiction just suddenly creeps up on ye
    #19097669 - 11/06/13 08:47 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

Before you know it, you're hooked. It just hits you in the face so suddenly. You wake up one day without any smokes and you get that sunken feeling in your chest. You need it just as much as you need bread or water. Nicotine is no longer a delicacy, it's an essential part of your body, mind, and life. These little bastards are so hard to quit.

When did you find out you were hooked? For me, it was a cold, winter day and it was snowing pretty heavily. I was sitting at home trying to fight the craving but it got so strong I hopped on my bike and biked 2k to get to my closest convenient store. ;( It was probably -30 degrees celsius. Damn.

For me it was school.

I used to smoke pretty sporadically, maybe a pack a week at most, usually less, and would quite often go for extended periods of time (weeks, months) with no cigarettes at all.

Then I went back to school. :gameover:

I'm at a pack a day. This is because I recently cut back. :argh:

And yes, it really did sneak up on me. I had no real tobacco cravings for something like five years after I smoked my first cigarette and found it enjoyable enough to do it again on occasion, but by the time the actual addiction kicked in it was already far too late, I was in pack-a-day territory and the fucking things were so habitually and chemically ingrained in me that I can't even imagine how I would stop. It's like a shit ball rolling down shit mountain. The best I can hope for (without a serious effort of will which would include an extended period of no alcohol) is to try to keep it from speeding up too much and gathering even more shit than it already continues to do. :lahey:

when I realised it wouldn't be easy to quit.

Mixing tobacco with weed and smoking cones is the only way I can go without cigarettes indefinitely. unless if I were to stop being a bitch and quit it all

Cig free for over three months now, never felt better.
The sooner you quit the easier it will be, and don't feel like you have to quit cold turkey. E-cigs and nicotine patches really helped me kick the habit.

Good for you, man. My roomie actually just quit earlier this year, around May or June or something, I think. He had to get a couple teeth removed, and took advantage of his convalescence to change his habits. It took me a while to stop waiting for him to come out and join me when it was time to smoke, but he's there, he's a non-smoker, never even tempted (that I can hear). Good willpower.

The thing that makes it so tough for me is really alcohol. I love drinking and I manage it within my lifestyle pretty well, but after I've had a beer or two I'll kill a man for a cigarette. It was like that even before I was nicotine-addicted. So if I wanted to quit smoking, I'd also have to quit alcohol for at least a month or so, and I really just don't feel like doing that. :restless:

Now E-cigs actually sound pretty interesting. I know they're healthier without the tar. I bet they would help kill the cigarette habit-ritual as well, since you don't have to step outside to smoke an E-cig. :strokebeard3:

Yeah, beware tho. The freedom of not having to go outside makes it almost more insidious of an addiction. You just sit there and vape all day long. It's too easy. I'm vaping right now.

It is however definitely better than cigs and you can wean yourself off the nicotine with increasingly weaker juices so its worth it. Plus its pretty damn tasty if you know the right kinda flavors to get.

They're great imo. When I drink, and I'm really craving a cig, I just pull out my e-cig and it immediately satisfies the craving.
I don't even use liquid with nicotine anymore, it's purely a physical habit now.
Best thing of all is I don't have to step out into the cold and freeze my ass off, and can smoke inside restaurants and shit.

I disagree with the OP, it takes a while to get an addiction to cigarettes, for years of smoking I could stop for extended peroids of timee with no problem. This is all IME though, I'm sure it's different for different people.

I didn't just randomly have an epiphany one day and realized "wow, now I'm addicted"

I knew I was slowly getting more and more addicted by how long I could go without a cig, that time kept getting shorter and shorter the longer I smoked for.

I knew what I was getting in to the whole time, if you really look back most people will realize that it wasn't a surprise, there are warning signs all throughout the beginning.

I noticed I was fully addicted to nicotine when I was 19.

I have smoked cigarettes for about 12 years, and I am a recent quitter.

I haven't smoked tobacco in over a month, I havent purchased a pouch of tobacco in over three months. I weened my self off of cigarettes by diluting my final pouch of tobacco with a herbal smoking mixture I made from various things in my garden. When it got so diluted that I was nearly smoking straight garden herbs and there almost no satisfaction from the smoke the herbs went in the compost.

Here is the thing I am still struggling with. I am still very addicted.
They say after the first three days being nicotine free the cravings get easier and easier. They say that when you stop smoking the smell of tobacco becomes repulsive.
Im calling shenanigans on those claims.
I am over one month nicotine free and still I crave cigarettes daily-- multiple times daily.
And the smell of tobacco in the air is SO DELICIOUS. It makes me want to run to the store and pick up some American Spirit, or Drum, or even some god-damn mutherfuckin' Top.
WTF, i thought i'd be over it by week two...
*sigh*
It is a daily battle that I am fighting

It's not necessarily so gradual for everyone. Around the time before I started smoking heavily, I'd actually been smoking more lightly than I had ever been since I first started smoking. I figured I had my shit in check; I was proud of my willpower. Then I went back to school and began my life as a chimney.

I just don't understand people saying it's so addictive, not saying they're lying, but it must just not affect everyone the same. I have never once had an uncontrollable urge for a cigarette, and I've been smoking for 3 years. I go weeks at a time without one with zero problems. Caffeine for me though is a whole different ball game, had to cut it out completely recently as I get moody and irritable without it.

It's because you go weeks at a time without one that you're not addicted honestly.

I don't think nicotine is addictive as they make it seem, it's more that you just get in the habit of smoking after you do it for so long and it's just a hard habit to break because you intertwine it in your life.

Regardless, the fact that I can smoke a few packs in a couple week period then decide, hey I don't really crave these all that much, and go a few weeks without any before maybe buying a pack should say something I think.

I'm not too worried about becoming addicted to cigs.

Aint it the truth brother.

I love the shit out of my ecig and i just bought it 3 days ago, its barely left my hand the whole time though.

My nicotine intake has had to increase like 300% since I’ve got it, Atleast my lungs don’t hurt anymore. Im just going to buy the lower nicotine content oil, and slowly try to ween off.

Personally, I could never get addicted to cigarettes because they literally feel toxic. Cocaine and heroin feel clean, but with cigarettes I experience part buzz, part adverse effects. So, how do you guys stand for that?

Nicotine is a pretty lousy drug by itself IMO.  I only really enjoy cigs when properly numbed by other drugs.  Otherwise I just find it a nice break from work or whatever I am doing, an excuse to go off and rythmically breathe by myself.

Nicotine sucks as a drug, it literally does nothing for me, it made me a little lighheaded/dizzy the first couple times I smoked, after that though, nothing.

Nicotine is one of the more under-appreciated drugs. It's like chocolate: it provides a sense of satiety on demand. It's great for chatting with strangers. It's great for chatting in general.

I recently quit smoking cigarettes. I'm nineteen years old. I first started smoking cigarettes after an extended break from pot, which probably contributed to the increased stress and frustration I was feeling. My girlfriend suggested a cigarette would calm me, and it did, although previous attempts at trying cigarettes did absolutely nothing for me but make me feel like I was dying. Anyways, I started smoking semi-regularly after that, a pack AT MOST a week, shared between my girlfriend & I. I was like this for a few months at most, maybe. One day I was smoking a cigarette and I found myself wanting to throw up. I tossed it & decided I didn't want cigarettes anymore. Right now, the last thing I want is a cigarette. The only time they seem appealing is in social situations, i.e. social smoking. Otherwise I don't really get anything out of them besides feeling like shit.
I'll smoke them when I'm drinking at a party, too, but again that ties into the whole social situation thing. I'm sure it's different for everyone because we all know each person has their own unique chemical makeup.

Personally, I could never get addicted to cigarettes because they literally feel toxic. Cocaine and heroin feel clean, but with cigarettes I experience part buzz, part adverse effects. So, how do you guys stand for that?

Lol, i remember my junkie days :cookiemonster:

Ya you don’t notice the adverse effects until you stop being strung out all day. If violently shitting water while being drenched in cold sweats isn’t an example of "adverse effects" in your mind, bravo.

now that is an addiction that creeps up on ya.......

I smoked cigarettes for about 3 years. I never really smoked that much though, maybe 3-5 cigs a day, sometimes going a few days without one. I decided to quit when I started working out again and while on the tread mill I felt like I was going to pass out because I couldn't breathe. I quit cold turkey a little over a year ago and it's been the best decision I made. It was pretty easy to quit for me unless I was drinking and my friends would smoke.

A lot of my friends bought e cigs with hopes it would help them quit. Now most of them suck on their vape all day and still smoke cigarettes on top of it  So I don't really believe they help from what I've seen.

Once you start buying packs you're screwed.
