I'm sure some of it will end up in the pockets of politicians, but that could be said for anything; if there's money to be made, it will end up in the pockets of the greedy.
Personally, if I had to pay an extra $50-75 for an ounce to know that I couldn't be arrested for it, I would just think of it as a "donation" to public education.
I think we could look at this as a good thing. While 25% does seem pretty high, think of all the good that could be done as a result of more people smoking weed.
It's not going to the schools, that's a lie to pull at people's heartstrings. The money is going right into the general fund, pols do this all the damn time and people keep falling for it .
Hey, Colorado pot smokers, get ready to become the new cigarette smokers. Whenever the pols need a little more money they will jack up pot taxes and if you complain, well, people will look at you as if you're some kind of monster cause it's a "sin" tax.
Sin taxes are dumb and should not exist, it's pure government greed, period.

yeah but that defeats the purpose of legalization if its still gonna be illegal to grow. ive heard everything from govt using chemicals on the weed and they will regulate potency.. so for all i know dank will be illegal just like how concentrates are looking

Can't the cartels just lower their prices lower than legal herb and still exist ? I'm in Texas and we pay 20 a gram, 55 an 8th ,100 for a quarter ,200 a half and 350-400 for an O. So if they keep prices at black market levels and tax it even higher, why would I buy it from them ? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something but doesn't that defeat the purpose ? I want a quarter of some good buds for 25 bucks dammit !!!

I too have somewhat mixed feelings on this issue. Although I'm a total supporter for widespread legalization of marijuana, I think 25% is a bit too much. If they sell grams for 7$, then I can understand since the tax wouldn't be that much (I know its always 25%, but for example 25% of 7$ IMO doesn't seem as bad as 25% of 20$)
However, I see grams being sold even in CA dispensaries for sometimes 20$, so a 25% tax would make buying legalized weed almost worse than buying from common dealers.
"Oh you want an oz? Well it costs 380....let me just ring it up...your total is 475."
That's crazy.

The tax isn't at a level where they could compete.
If you want cheap weed, you guys just have to wait until the large companies come into the equation. That's gonna take a while, but it will happen.

ElVatoFirme said: From what I know about the current marijuana scene in Colorado, the prices vary widely depending on the region of Colorado.
When you're close to another state, it's not all too uncommon to find prices in the ranges you just stated (though I doubt its ever above 300 a zip here). This is because, obviously, it could be transported right across state lines and profits would be doubled, easily.
However, in central Colorado (dispensary) prices are: 8 - 10 a g 20 - 30 an 1/8 40 - 55 a 1/4 75 - 100 a 1/2 120 - 165 a full
Street prices usually stay around 200 a zip. But with everyone (and in Colorado, I do mean everyone) harvesting right now, I don't see many people getting away with selling it for that much.
That's seriously incredible. Central you mean like Denver, CS, along the I-25 corridor, yeah?
That is correct. And yes, it is incredible. But believe me, not all the buds are caked in trichs. You will find people getting rid of mids for 150 when you can find top shelf herb for the same price.

I absolutely agree about the "sin" taxes; they're fucking ridiculous to have, particularly in a country that claims to have separation of church and state. However, I think we need to stop looking at it that way (as a society, not just pot smokers), and we should instate a system of checks to ensure that the money is, in fact, going to the right places. I think we'll be a lot better off in the long run if our attitude is not "That's a bad thing, so we should tax it more" and we make it "That may not be the best thing, so let's use some of the profits to better our world."

25% tax seems way too high.
If anything, they should cut that % in half, and up the tax on alcohol.
@rbalzer, $20/g for A-grade is actually pretty common in my area, too, when buying single grams. I've only seen it drop lower (15/g, more rarely 10/g) a few times.
My state has also not had decriminalization or medical for very long, either. Believe me when I tell you that living in one of those states, or right next to one, has an impact on market prices. Even now I know some people who get their bud shipped in from cali.
But yeah, even just a handful of years ago, the best of the best could easily run you up to $400-$500 for a lid. It's down a bit from that now. I usually don't get more than 1/4 or so at a time, which runs around $80-100 depending who you go through, and the quality.
And even at that price, some of the shit looks like it's been lightly keifed in some fashion.

Just read a little article in the Daily Doobie pertaining to the cost of marijuana that I thought some of you may be interested in.
It states:
Quote:
The end of the $25 eighth to which Coloradans have grown accustomed to is at hand. The Marijuana Price Index already has the cost at $30 [an eighth] in Boulder and Denver. Williams predicts a rise to at least $35 that could last for years or could even become the new normal.
This is all apparently due to an increase in demand come Jan. 1st. The article predicts an increase in prices, as well as a possible "marijuana shortage".
Here is a link to the article; it can be found on page 1, and continues onto page 2: Daily Doobie - Recreational Sales Promise Change
This issue also has an interview with Tommy Chong. It's short, but it was interesting to hear he cured his cancer using Rick Simpson's oil.

This tax is not gonna hurt the MJ inustry as a whole here in Co. but it will hurt the Rec MJ sales industry here. I can tell you this, if you live in Colorado and you are paying over $150 an oz. for really good cannabis, then you are getting ripped off!
Everybody grows out here, hell I haven't bought weed in months and I probably only bought a grand total of 1 oz. since it became legal this year. I grow my own as do many I know and we trade and take care of each other when we are low. With everyone growing and medical dispensaries(who don't get that tax), there is plenty of cannabis available without having to go to a Rec MJ shop.
The rec sales scene will be just a novelty at first for natives, but because MJ is already so available coupled with the enormous tax, this novelty will diminish. It might have a place for tourists and a small percentage of natives, but I believe that most people will stick to growing their own as well as renewing their red card to avoid the tax.
Time will tell though.
