The key is that there are only a fairly small number of species you might like to target. Sure, if you look at the list for Washington, it seems long. But of those, for quality and abundance, you'll probably want to stick to the woodlovers (Psilocybe cyanescens, P. azurescens, and relatives).
Once you've done your research and narrowed down the search, look at all the official threads for your area: this year, last year, etc. This will help you get a very good idea of what they look like. It's also very good to look at other people's ID requests, because you get to know what species people are often confusing for actives.

There's not much more to it that that. Go hunting. The instinct for where you might actually find them develops with practice.
