Hendrix didn't write Hey Joe. I think Buchanan has more soul than Hendrix, who leaves me cold.
Both junkies, by the way.
Hendrix may have been a junkie but he was extremely intelligent. What about Fire? or Wind Cries Mary?

Purple Haze is probably his most well known riff, that one slipped my mind at the time though.

there are some books and documentaries that talk about Hendrix and Heroin though his drummer for Band of Gypsies Buddy Miles was apparently a straight up and down junkie.

Jimi wasn't a junkie but he did dabble
Lots of amazing players posted above, I'm going to have to come back and check out all these videos too many to watch ATM
I've been moving more towards technical stuff lately. I started out playing classic rock then started playing metal now I feel like I've transformed so much as a person I can now just jam and play from my heart and mind. Sounds dumb but it's true, other long time players will know what I mean.
It's interesting to me how my music taste changes as time goes by too

David Gilmore seeing The Wall particularly Comfortably Numb at the Planitarium Lazer light show on 4 tabs of acid forever imortalized his spot on my favs
Tom Morello RATM's first album is one of my all time favorite albums due in part to his awesome guitar skillz!
Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Tod Jones, and Angus Young are also other favorites of mine.

Well, 'the best guitarist' is a matter of taste when ther are so many good ones. the best one I think I saw live was Paul Gilbert with Racer X. I saw him at the Stone in San Fransisco, and he played fucking Van Halen's 'Eruption' with a pick glued on the end of a black and decker drill. Street lethal is probably his best album.

That's insane. I remember watching a video of Paul Gilbert playing a Racer X tune a few years ago and loving it. Haven't heard anything from since then until right now.

That doesn't sound dumb at all. Good on you. There are players who are very technical and have some amazing playing skills but absolutely no soul. It might as well be a robot playing.
John McGeoch of the Banshees hasn't been mentioned yet, so he definitely has my vote! He was an influence on Frusciante, as a matter of fact, so maybe he might interest you as well, OP. He only played on a few Banshees albums, but his contributions were incredible. I really recommend: Painted Bird, Cascade, Spellbound, Head Cut, Red Over White, Israel (I'm still wondering about this middle eight bit), and Melt!
I also really love Robert Smith's guitar playing. He's very subtle, but some of his chord progressions just leave me so gobsmacked, like where does he think of this stuff? Some of my favorites: Lament, The Drowning Man, A Strange Day, Push, Fear of Ghosts, Fascination Street, Last Dance.... I could be here all night, really. He used a Fender Bass VI on Disintegration, it produces such a beautiful and pure sound.
