Recomendations on Agar agar

Can anyone recommend some agar for beginners.Should i concentrate on the premix or blend it myself? what brands are the best for the newbies??

I always use malt yeast agar: 10-20 grams light malt extract 20 grams agar powder 2 grams yeast 1000ml h2o

Pre-mix always leaves you limited, that and the individual components are always cheaper than buying it mixed.

Has any one ever used the junior science agar and petri dish combo from hobby lobby? think its like 2-3$ and you get 6g of agar and 2 plastic dishes.How far will 6g's go if i mix it myself.I can not find any supermarket around here that has agar. Thanks for the info Its like having a shit load of Heisenbergs at my disposal..

Asian markets, or possibly a health food store. I don't think most supermarkets carry agar unless they have a bigger ethnic section.

You also need some kind of nutrients.
You cannot just use agar in a dish.
Just sayin.

I would assume the little kit thingy is an agar/nutrient mix. Probably not the optimal mix for mycelium, more than likely some type of animal protein for bacteria growth.

No nutrients just agar.The instructions say to add plain sugar for growing bacteria. Im going to try potato flakes n honey
