Really cool, congrats! I enjoyed your pictures. I thought it was difficult but doesn't look too hard. I think I may continue my research and try this soon.

Great job man!!! You are inspiring me, I am starting the exact same Tek tomorrow!! The only difference is I work in a microbiological lab so I have access to autoclaves and sterile flow hoods that I am going to utilize to make sure I am at zero contamination. I hope mine goes as quickly as yours!

Careful. I also have access to microbiological labs at my university, however due to the legality of my shroomies i dont think its a good idea to use their equipment, so i tend to stay away. Not saying dont do it, just make sure your not breaking any rules

Commercial farms don't rip out large chunks of substrate(which DOES invite molds) to harvest mushrooms, and then cut them a second time to remove the debris. If they did, they'd never make a dime selling their product at less than $2/pound wholesale.
Cut mushrooms off at the base, and if anyone tells you the leftover stump is going to rot in the two to three weeks the substrate has left to live anyway, just know they're an idiot with no experience whatever. RR.

I am aware of the legality issue. I autoclaved and inoculated today without issue. The jars are sitting in the cupboard above my fridge as we speak. Will check on them in a couple days and see how they are doing.

Just so I'm understanding this correctly; you innoc'd in the lab, then transfer jars back to your house for storage and colonization period? I'm a noob so I'm curious wouldn't this make it vulnerable to contams a little more by disturbing the dry verm laying (assuming you are going off PF Tek). This was a question I was going to ask on a thread anyway, transportation of jars after inoculation general rules or guidelines to avoid contams/ or other issues.

dude no offense but how is this video helpful...the lady plucks the mushrooms then cuts them...performing both options defeating the purpose of OP's questions "cut or pull"?

The fact that the fruits were twisted and pulled off the substrate, means that chunks of substrate were ripped out as well.
This is what they were cutting off.
The argument is that cutting them off of the substrate INSTEAD of twisting and pulling them will cause less damage to the substrate, and be less work in the end.
I posted that video because RR said
"""Commercial farms don't rip out large chunks of substrate(which DOES invite molds) to harvest mushrooms, and then cut them a second time to remove the debris."""
And in that video they do just what RR said commercial farms do not do.

As a chef, I think it's cool to note, now that I notice these things now....button mushrooms are always shipped cut at the base. Shitake, portabello, oyster, (not crimini, they are cut) are usually ripped, and have substrate attached at the stem base.
I have harvested...probably a couple ounces, no scale around here, atm. The cakes are under water for their 24-hour soak then second flush. I understand I don't do a roll in verm for the second flush?

This might be an issue if I was less sterile, but I kept the jars completely covered sealed and sterile after inoculation. So no this shouldn't be an issue until they are exposed in an area where contams might be present. Most contams are from insufficient sterilization or introduction during inoculation. I should have avoided those with my equipment.

Okay so let me get this straight, are you saying that industrial mushroom farm techniques are wrong or that RR is wrong?

Yes.
Both, and neither.

Okay. So basically you did absolutely nothing in helping answer the question of cut or pull method.

Unless the mushies are so lightly rooted in that they are almost falling off on their own, cut them.
