Quick Car Question?

I found an offer on craigslist for a 2006 mazda rx8.. all decked out with 70,000 miles on it for only $1850. I emailed the dude and asked why he was only asking 1850, he then replied back with all this information saying that he shipped it to my area before for a buyer (pa) and the dude couldnt afford it, so it got sent back.
Ill just post his reply..
Quote:
Hello, My apologizes for the delay, my 2006 Mazda RX-8 is in great Condition, super clean, 70,000 miles, Gasoline(1.3L R2 EFI), VIN: (my business), no DINGS, no accidents, ALWAYS garage kept, service records up-to-date, clear title no loan or lien on it. The car is regisatered ona Florida but don’t worry the title is clear and we won’t have any problems registering the car in your name. The price on it is $1,850. I am selling my car, because at the moment I’m in combat training at the Eglin Air Force Base and I am do to leave over the seas in about two weeks. At the moment my car is at the shipping warehaouse in Miramar Beach FL, because I had the car for sale a few weeks ago and I managed to sell it to a person from your area. The car was sent to him, but when it reached the destination, the buyer was unable to pay for it, because he didn't got a loan. The car was send back to me and remained at the shipping company until I was able to find another buyer. I asked Google Checkout to help me solve this issue. I will have it shipped with DAS Auto and I think I can have it delivered in 2-3 working days max. Don’t worry about the shipping price, I will pay it, because I am seeding it to same area and I will only pay a quartet of the price. And this is not all, after you receive my car you will get a 5 days testing period, before you decide buy it. To make this deal happen I must ask Google Checkout to send you the terms and conditions of the Google Checkout Program, but before I can do that I need your approval. So if you agree please give me your full name, address and contact number(s) so that Google Checkout can register you as a potential buyer and sent you the terms and conditions. Please remember that at this moment you have no obligations what so ever, just read the Transaction Term and after that let me know if you are interested in doing this sort of transaction.
What are your guys thoughts?

I'd steer clear. Do all CL transaction in cash only and in person only.
ESPECIALLY WITH CARS!

Thats what i was thinking... but he gave me an actual VIN number, and I looked it up.
I emailed back again as to why his price was so low. Still waiting on a reply.
Do genuine offers like this really exist and are successful?

I've bought and sold cars on CL and at least here in Canada you need to sign transfer papers and have some sort of bill of sale.
I look and write down the DL# and reference the address. Make sure there are no liens on the vehicle and get a mechanic to check things out before you buy.
If you can't do these things beforehand then could very well be getting scammed.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

I'm sure there are people out there who sell stuff for really low prices because they are hard pressed for time.. But I also think it's much more likely that when an offer is that good, it's just a scam and the price is so low to make people jump on it and buy the car rather than ask a bunch of questions and risk losing out on the "deal of a lifetime".
Shit, I sold a 10+ year old Ford Taurus (A/C didn't work, interior and exterior were not the cleanest, it had some engine problems) for 1,200.. I'm not sure of the blue book but I'm sure that car, in that good of condition would fetch a lot more than 1,850.

LOL. That's 110% a scam. I sell things on craigslist all the time including cars. Tell him the only way you'll do it is to meet him in person only and that you want to see his DL and all that and he'll either bullshit you or quit talking to you altogether. I've heard this same EXACT story with a car.
I posted a phone i'm selling on craigslist last night and i've had 4 different people email/text me with the same type of bullshit. I can't believe people actually fall for it..but they must if they keep doing it.

Sounds like a scam all craigslist deals should be made with the person there. + that story sounds kind of sketch.
Rx8's are crap anyways if it's automatic the rotary engine will give out for sure

This is what he said in a reply..
Quote:
Thanks for contacting me,
As I said my last transaction failed, so the car was send back to me and at the moment I have it at a shipping warehouse in Miramar Beach FL, 25 miles from my base. The real problem is that I have to leave soon and I don’t have much time for a proper cash sell. The price is low so I can sell if real fast, believe me I tried a higher price but no one was interested. Besides that there is no one at the shipping company that could show you the car or supervise the test drive. Now you see why I am using Google’s Checkout help, to sell my car.
The transaction will go like this: If you decide to buy my car you will have to send the payment to Google Checkout, I can deliver it at your home address along with all the necessary documentations required for registration and this will include the keys. The documents will include bill of sale, car's manual, the title, to prove the ownership and to be able to register car. The clear title and the bill of sale will be both signed, by me, so you can become owner of the car on spot.
After the shipping company delivers the car, you will have between 3-5 days to test it. The testing period will start after you receive the car. I think that 3 days will be more than enough to test it. If you like my car and you decide to keep it, the deal is done. If you don't like it, Google Checkout will give you a full refund in the next 24 hours and after that the shipping company pick up the car and will sent it back to me. The return shipping is also covered. I can assure you that the car is as described and it's in perfect working condition, because I wouldn't go to all this trouble if the car had problems.
So if you’re still interested please give me your full name, address and contact number(s) so that Google Checkout can register you as a potential buyer and sent you the terms and conditions.
Thanks!
What is some information that I should ask for that would break a scam, so I can just get straight to the point?
How much would I risk if I gave my name number and address?
The more I think about all the information he gave me, the more i think its legitimate. Should I ask him to take a picture of his DL, or just ask for his number or something?

why the fuck would they need a name and address before you read the terms and conditions? Shouldn't that be freely available?
Look into google checkout yourself, don't let him sign you up. Call and ask what sort of buyer protection they have. Sounds very fishy but who knows, maybe it checks out.

yeah im gonna call google checkout first thing in the morning. He said he's already asked them to help him.. so im gonna call and see if thats true. Im assuming he would be using his same gmail to use with google checkout also.
How does one deliver a car to your address anyways? Does somebody just drive it to your house, or is it like towed or something?

Those are good starting questions for him, if his reg info is the same as what he's provided you, and what delivery method he is using, any other costs you might incur.

I still say this looks like a textbook craigslist scam, email craigslist support about it, I bet they will say that it is a known scam.

Speaking about Google Checkout as if it were a person makes me think of silly African scammers.

Clearly a scam.
Buy local.
Buy in person.
That's just the start for safely purchasing vehicles.

While a complete piece of shit, that car is certainly worth more than his asking price. I would avoid this guy unless you have reason otherwise to believe that it's a legitimate offering.

Well Google Checkout is a legitimate transferring process, so im gonna call them first and confirm that they even talked to them. And then im gonna see if i can get the shipping company he says hes using, and then call them to see if the car exists down there.
Im gonna either buy this car or bust this dude.
